Peter Taylor set his sights on back-to-back wins and declared: Hopefully our luck is finally turning.

The City boss has been as frustrated as anyone by his side’s stuttering start to the campaign.

But spirits have been lifted since the last-ditch win over Gillingham and Taylor believes a much more confident side will head for Northampton on Saturday.

He said: “Things haven’t been going for us in lots of ways. We’ve been punished for every mistake we make and it’s been difficult. It’s time that something went our way.

“The reaction from the winning goal showed how much it meant to the players. It was a very important win for us and they were absolutely delighted. But I don’t think they need convincing that we are too far away.”

City will be looking for their first away win as they face the Cobblers at the weekend, before travelling to Sheffield’s Don Valley Stadium for a Yorkshire derby with Rotherham on Tuesday.

Taylor said: “We all know we haven’t performed. Not many players in that changing room are performing at their best level at the minute.

“A good win like that one will provide a bit of a boost. We’re playing more to the standard that we expect and it wouldn’t surprise me if we could now go on a good run.”

Taylor is unlikely to chance either Michael Flynn or Simon Ramsden on Saturday but, barring any reaction in training, the pair could come into contention for the clash with Ronnie Moore’s Millers.
