Liversedge 0 Eccleshill 0

Liversedge and Eccleshill will do it all again on Tuesday after they drew a blank in the second qualifying round of the FA Vase at Clayborn.

The goalless stalemate means Eccleshill have wrestled home advantage for the replay.

The game went into extra time but that period was a little subdued after Eccleshill’s leading scorer Andy Howland suffered a bad injury.

He was stretchered off in the third minute of the first half of extra time after damaging his knee and was transferred to hospital.

Sedge spokesman John Hewitt said: “It wasn’t a bad tackle because it wasn’t that kind of game, despite the derby atmosphere. Andy just twisted his knee when he landed badly and couldn’t continue.

“There was a stoppage of about five minutes before they could move him and he was laid on a stretcher at the side of the pitch for a while before the ambulance arrived.

“That injury must have knocked the players and, added to the tiredness that was creeping in, it led to a boring extra time with no real goalmouth action.”

Howland had been a thorn in Sedge’s side during normal time, as had Matt Moore and Matt Dempsey.

They were on the end of the visitors’ better chances, while Paul Smith came closest in both halves of normal time for the home side.

Sedge keeper Mark Bower made some fine saves to deny Howland, Moore and Dempsey but he was not even the best keeper on show. That accolade went to Thaj Bell, who not only made reaction stops but also commanded his area.

Eagles secretary Brian Bell said: “We face a frantic day tomorrow (Monday) making sure everything is ready for the replay.

“The referees’ association cannot be contacted over the weekend so we have to sort out the officials and arrange staff for our facilities.

“Hopefully there will be a bigger crowd than usual because it is a derby in the FA Vase.”
