Bradford City goalkeeping coach Dittmer impressed with McLaughlin

City’s new goalkeeping chief has tipped Jon McLaughlin to become one of the best in League Two.

Tim Dittmer only joined Peter Taylor’s full-time coaching staff at the end of last month but has already been impressed by what he has seen.

The Warrington-based 25-year-old certainly has an eye for talent, having worked in the academy set-ups at Premier League giants Liverpool and Everton, and insists City’s rookie custodian has the confidence and skill-set to be a success.

McLaughlin’s stellar performance in this week’s Carling Cup win against Nottingham Forest provided persuasive evidence to support his argument.

Dittmer said: “I think he’s got what it takes. He’s worth his place in the team and he doesn’t want to let it go.

“Jon’s hungry, he’s intelligent and he’s got a lot of desire. Hopefully, with some of my input, he’ll get even better and become a goalkeeper for us over a long period of time.

“I think he can be one of the stronger keepers in this league. He has the potential to do that.”

The appointment of a full-time goalkeeping coach was seen as crucial by Taylor, due to the youthful make-up of City’s trio between the posts.

McLaughlin, Lloyd Saxton and Chris Elliot have an average age of just 20 and Dittmer has found them an ideal group to work with.

“The goalkeepers here are all really keen to push on, learn and progress so hopefully, with the right work from me, they all will,” he said.

“It’s a great group to work with. They’re all young, hungry lads and enthusiastic to improve but the other good thing about them is they’re all humble.

“They’ve not got a problem with listening, asking questions and looking to improve and I’ve been impressed with that.”

All three can expect to be kept on their toes, with Dittmer planning to challenge not only their physical and technical skills but also their mental capabilities.

He said: “For me, 70 per cent of being a goalkeeper is mental. On the pitch you’re on your own, no matter what anyone says.

“You’ve got to make split-second decisions and when it’s the wrong one, everyone’s hands are flying up in the air and they’re asking what you’re doing.

“Mentally we test them, give them different ideas and make it difficult for them. With Jon being the kind of guy he is, he’s very mature like that and he deals with it very well.”

I agree that he has the potential to be very good. He's sat patiently for 2 years which shows he has an excellent attitude so good luck to him.
What us fans have got to realise is that he will make mistakes due to his inexperience but we have to stay behind him and make sure his confidence doesn't suffer when mistakes happen.

At least he is our keeper making mistakes and learning his trade. Unlike some other keepers we have had in the recent past.

Even experienced keepers make mistakes, ask Rob Green.
It's about how they bounce back from them and the crowd can play a big big part in that and his development.
We need to accept he WILL cost us goals because that is what keepers do.
He made a mistake at Shrewsbury and look how he bounced back against Forrest.

Personally, I think he already is 'one of the better keepers in this league'. I think the potential is that he can become one of the better keepers outside the Premier League (if not in it). Yes, he will (and has) made mistakes, but so too has every other keeper in our league.

Thanks Dittmer, but your comments aren't as positive as they could have been!

good point....his progress is our investment i suppose rather then other keepers progress being to someone elses benefit - although not many have progressed in recent season i.e. Deadwood. Cant wait till he comes back to VP with Oxford - he's gonna get it...lol

When I heard we had hired a goalkeeping coach in his mid twenties, I was highly sceptical.

However, I have a friend who's son is at the Liverpool Academy, and she said not only what a great coach Tim is, but a great bloke as well. I believe he has a very limited practical playing background - Leigh RMI - where injury cut short his career but this has not affected his ability as a coach.

jon mac would have been better had we used him all last season instead of town garbage such as deadwood and to a lesser extent glennon: but that's history

All good positive comments!

All I would add is that all our players regardless of age or position will make mistakes and all of them deserve our full backing at all times regardless of this.

That's what players and managers mean when they say the crowd can be our 12th man. When somebody makes a mistake, get behind them, encourage them, chant their name, whatever. They're far more likely to make amends this way than with the usual abuse offered offered from certain sections which is probably why our home form has been so poor over recent seasons.

Looking forward to getting our first 3 points on the board tomorrow.

i agree with your comments and i'm not a boo boy but to be fair such people have had many reasons to do so in recent seasons with the depressing atmosphere lately hanging over the club but i sense the gloom is lifting and lets hope we get the 3 points tomorrow to continue the optimism.

My starting XI tomorrow: if 433
GK Jon
RB Ramsden
LB Luke OB
CB Duff
CB Williams
CM Doherty (in the hole)
CM Ademayi
CM Bullock
Wide Left - Moult
Wide Right - Evans
CF - Hanson

That is what i think but i'd have Speight on before Evans.

A Good looking strong team:the only thing I would suggest is that Threlfall and OB will start bringing on Syers and Evans and Speight if it needs to be shaken up a bit through the game.

However for the first time in years we have players now fighting to get into the first team and that has to be for the ultimate benefit of the club.

Building a strong unit and one which is capable of playing different systems and one which is capable of holding it's own in a higher division:s o no pressure but come on lads and three points.

I cannot again be there and will miss most of this season --see comments elsewhere about a heart op. Too much excitement might be too much for me LOL

He will probably play a blinder against us and then go back to normal.......

I also expect Taylor to select a 4-3-3, but I must admit, I'm completely stumped by who he will pick. We have so many options now that it is very difficult to predict, especially as we lost the opening game but won in the cup when several players were left out.

For example, does he leave Rehman in at right-back and partner Williams with Duff, or does he recall Hunt/Ramsden and Oliver? Will we recall Threlfall or keep O'Brien in at left-back? Bully was replaced by Syers in midweek and has now signed a contract. Will the latter start or will Bully be recalled? Neither Daley or Neilson impressed in midweek, so will Taylor leave them out? Speight and Moult played well, but will that be enough to retain their places?

These are very difficult decisions for Taylor to make. How nice to be in this position. To complete this post, I will attempt to predict Taylor's team and the score;

GK - McLaughlin
LB - Threlfall
RB - Ramsden
CB - Oliver
CB - Williams
CM - Doherty
CM - Adeyemi
CM - Bullock
RM - Evans
LM - Daley
FW - Hanson

The score...... 3-1 to City. (even though the security words show 'poor-draw')!!!!!

you never know Jon Mc may be the next: he has achieved some notice in the student games for certain and, no doubt, bigger clubs will be watching how Taylor brings these young players through: we now look to have 6 or 7 players at least in the squad capable of playing at a higher level. (championship) but most of the squad look more than adequate for the next division up.

I will attempt to pick what I think Taylor will pick.
GK Johny
RB Ramsden/Rehman
CB Duff
CB Williams/Oliver
CM Doherty
CM Syers
CM Adeyemi
R Daley
CF Moult
L Speight
Hopefully Doherty will make it, not made training this week but he was limping Tues from about 60 minutes.

hanson missing is he? perhaps an injury to his ankle and to be used as a sub again.

not sure who R Daley is but if you mean Omar Daley I really cannot see him figuring unless as a sub when we are two or three up and Stevenage are there for the taking.

it is however pleasing that we have now real competition for places this season and that can be nothing but good for the club.

Not sure if Hanson is missing, I haven't made it to training this week, I am guessing he may favour Moult more central against a side where chances in front of goal could be plenty and he is more prolific.

moult is more prolific in front of goal? what measure are you using?

Let us hope Hanson is fit: and when fit I would start him everytime over Moult.

However I think, in time, we will see both working together up front being supported my midfield players who can get ahead of them.
