City claimed a dramatic Carling Cup upset after beating Championship promotion contenders Nottingham Forest 2-1 in their first round clash.

Matt Thornhill opened the scoring for the visitors but David Syers responded after the break and neither team could score again in the 90 minutes.

But City sealed their passage into the next round when James Hanson struck in the first period of extra time.

A cagey first half yielded few opportunities until Forest struck ten minutes before the break.

Chris Cohen's cross evaded everyone in the penalty box and Thornhill popped up at the back post to volley home.

But, following a shift from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3 after half-time, City responded well and equalised through Syers, who had signed on non-contract terms prior to the game.

The midfielder made up an impressive amount of ground to score from a tight angle after Jake Speight had nudged James Hanson's knock-on past Forest keeper Lee Camp.

Both Speight and Garath McCleary came close to sealing the tie in the late stages but neither team could prevent extra time.

City looked the brighter side in the two extra periods and the clincher came when Hanson slotted home from close range after Simon Ramsden's driven free kick had caused chaos in the box.
