Three birdies in the last five holes helped Oxenhope’s William Whiteoak clinch the Yorkshire Under-16 title and an impressive double.

The Bingley St Ives member, who won the Bradford Junior Individual Championship at West Bradford in June, added to his trophy collection with rounds of 71 and 70 for a one-under-par 141 at Doncaster-based Wheatley.

Whiteoak was crowned joint-champion with host player Guy Winstanley, who carded the same score, although the Oakbank School pupil’s second-round back nine of 33 put him top of the leaderboard.

The Bingley club scratch handicapper said: “I hit well off the tee and putted well but I struggled in parts. I even shanked it on one hole but I managed to keep it together.”

Despite being two over par with five holes to play, Whiteoak knew opportunities lay in wait and seized them.

“There was a short par four which you could drive and a par five which was driver, iron,” he said.

“I birdied the par-three 14th from eight feet with the help of the ‘MacKenzie’ green (two-tier), birdied 15 and then the last.”

On winning the prestigious crown following his Bradford triumph, the 16-year-old former Keighley junior said: “It’s a good benchmark and nice to win them both. It would be nice to try and win a national one now.”

Alongside revising for his GCSEs this summer, Whiteoak has also played an important part in Bingley St Ives’ Division Two title triumph in the Bradford Union Scratch League.
