Leeds have completed the signing of Billy Paynter, who was out of contract at Swindon.

The 26-year-old striker, who had a loan spell at Bradford in 2007, will join United on July 1 in a three-year deal.

Paynter, who scored on his City debut and went on to pick up four goals in 15 matches, was a prolific scorer with Swindon last season, netting 29 times.

He jumped at the chance of moving up to the Championship after the Robins were beaten in the League One play-offs.

Leeds boss Simon Grayson said: “He proved his worth last season by scoring four goals against us in two matches.

“He works hard, holds the ball up well and has shown he knows where the net is.”

But Grayson was quick to point out that Paynter is not the new Jermaine Beckford, who has moved to Everton.

He said: “You can’t make direct comparisons. He has a different style about him and he will do the things that brought him success last season.”

Paynter made his league debut for Port Vale aged 16 and, as well as City and Swindon, has played for Southend and Hull, where he was signed by current Bantams boss Peter Taylor.

In all he has made 210 senior appearances and scored 82 goals.
