Simon Grayson is looking for a hero at Elland Road tomorrow to take Leeds United to promotion and a brighter future.

Jermaine Beckford’s 30 goals have played a huge part in putting Leeds on the brink of Championship football, but manager Grayson doesn’t care who grabs the glory against Bristol Rovers, so long as his team banks the three points needed to guarantee promotion.

Grayson rates the game as even more important than the FA Cup victory against Manchester United at Old Trafford in January, and he says if Leeds are promoted from Coca-Cola Football League One it will be an even greater personal achievement than guiding Blackpool into the Championship three years ago.

Grayson, who was a junior at the club when Howard Wilkinson’s Leeds won promotion from the old Second Division in 1990, will be a hero with Leeds fans if his team end three years in this division tomorrow, but he says: “The players all know what is at stake and I will tell them before the game that somebody could be a hero in that dressing room.

“Whether it is Jermaine (Beckford), Max Gradel, my captain, my goalkeeper or whoever, hopefully someone in the ranks of Leeds United will be a hero by getting us promoted. They are aware of what is at stake and hopefully they will prove a point at the weekend.

“I will tell them to go out there, enjoy themselves, have no regrets and enjoy the game.”

Grayson is well aware that Bristol have nothing to play for, apart from their own pride, but he warned: “They’ve had some good results, including winning at Swindon. I am sure their manager Paul Trollope will be telling his players to enjoy it and ruin the party for us.”

Grayson puts the significance of tomorrow’s game into sharp context by admitting: “It is definitely more important than the cup games against Manchester United, Tottenham and Liverpool because promotion has been our priority from day one.

“I dropped down from the Championship to achieve that target and I would like to think it will happen.

“Hopefully we will get the same buzz tomorrow as we did after beating Manchester United, but every league game has been far more important than the cup-ties because the league is our bread and butter.

"If we win promotion, it will surpass my achievement in getting Blackpool out of League One because there was no expectancy level there.

"We came with a run and got promoted through the play-offs, but at Leeds there has been so much expectancy since I walked in here as manager.

“We’ve had pressure in every game, so if we get out of this division it will be better than anything else I have achieved. It will give me immense pride and fulfilment because I am a Leeds fan as well.”

Once again Grayson must decide whether to play Beckford from the start, in what could be his final appearance for the club, or hand him a place on the bench for the fifth successive game.
