Former Bradford Park Avenue and England centre-forward Ray Charnley has died aged 74.

Charnley, who made his name at Blackpool scoring 222 goals in 407 appearances for the Seasiders between 1957 and 1968, was signed by Avenue manager Laurie Brown in January 1969 after spells with Preston and Wrexham.

During Avenue’s final season in the Football League, 1969-70, he was top-scorer with 12 goals in 42 appearances.

After Avenue were voted out of the League he moved to non-league Morecambe where he ended his playing career before setting up a painting and decorating business in Blackpool.

His one and only England call-up was in 1962 when he faced France in a European Champion-ship match at Hillsborough.
