Whitby Town 2 Park Avenue 3

Avenue climbed another few places up the UniBond League Premier Division table with a second 3-2 away victory on the bounce tonight, despite the best attempts of a former player to scupper their progress.

The visitors were good value for their victory and could have won by a bigger margin but Jimmy Beadle’s brace almost took the gloss off it.

The player was popular when he spent a loan period at Horsfall Stadium some years back but has ended up at Whitby and he proved he has lost none of his sharpness.

With Chris Hall, the two-goal hero from Saturday’s win at Stocksbridge PS, resting an ankle injury, Aiden Savory replaced him in the starting line-up and emulated his colleague with a double.

Savory broke the deadlock in the fifth minute with a good shot from outside the area after turning his marker.

Beadle eclipsed that with a stunning strike to equalise on the quarter hour.

Avenue, who were dominating long periods of the game, still reached the break in front after retaking the lead in the 37th minute. A fine move ended with a ball in from the right flank and Savory banged in his second.

The home side must have had a flea in their ear during the interval and they raised the tempo at the start of the second period.

Avenue weathered that brief storm and went on to open up a two-goal cushion in the 78th minute.

Savory was involved but only as provider as his cross from the right picked out Luke Gibson, who headed into the top corner.

A later header from centre back Amjad Iqbal was then cleared off the line.

In the last minute, a long ball from the home side forced a save from Steve Dickinson but Beadle latched onto the rebound and fired home his second of the game.
