When Deano was offered the player-coach role by Toddy at Darlington, I thought it was perfect for him.

He wasn’t in the front line but was learning off a manager the good things and the bad.

Unfortunately, it’s not worked out but it’s given him a little taste of it and I know Deano wants more on that side of the game.

Management is so tough to break into. There are few opportunities and that many people want them.

It’s going to be a brave chairman who is willing to take a chance and throw him in at the deep end.

At times he’s had his daft head on and will that go against him?

In the meanwhile he’s filling his time watching games and doing some summarising for Sky. I flicked on the other night and almost jumped seeing him wearing a chamois leather jacket.

It was that big, he could wash my car on a Sunday in a quarter of the time with that thing!

Who knows if he will get a break but Deano just needs to keep going out to matches. He’s got the profile of being on TV.

He wants to stay in the game in some capacity and it’s still good to see him involved, whether it’s coaching or just on the TV. He’s a personality along the lines of Bobby Campbell.

People say these days there aren’t enough characters in the game and Deano is certainly one.
