Avenue chief executive Bob Blackburn has revealed that boss John Deacey wants to bring in up to SIX new faces to reignite their promotion bid.

The new manager promised to ring the changes after starting his second stint in the Horsfall hot-seat with a 1-0 loss to UniBond Division One outfit Clitheroe in the FA Trophy.

And he has already handed a wish-list to the board as he seeks to instil a harder-working mentality within the squad.

Blackburn said: “The six players suggested to us are all grafters, workers, Trojans. They will not be short of effort.

“That’s what’s needed to be honest. It’s not fair to call them workhorses because they have craft about them as well but they will put a shift in.

“The ones with the fancy hairdos and the handbags can stand and watch until they find themselves new clubs.”

The Avenue owner is in full agreement with Deacey that the squad needs an overhaul.

He said: “It was obvious to everyone that some players weren’t doing it.

“Anyone who has seen a few of our games so far this season will know that.

“If they have just seen the odd match they might be thinking that the players weren’t doing too badly but that’s the problem.

“There are players who are turning it on for one in maybe three games. That is no good to the football club and no good for the manager.

“The board have set a target of promotion this season to the Blue Square North and we calculated our budget accordingly.

“Those aims are falling short on the playing side so I agree with Deacey that some changes are needed.”

The club were hoping to land two targets in time for tomorrow’s game against Stocksbridge but Blackburn warned other signings may take time.

He said: “Transfers are a very tricky business at the best of times but when the season is in full swing they are even more treacherous.”
