It’s not often that a player gets the man of the match champagne for ten minutes’ work but Max Gradel picked up the bubbly for Leeds against Norwich.

And whereas the nation was critical of David Beckham’s recent award for England, there was no arguing with Gradel’s nomination on Monday.

The Leicester loanee turned a match in which Leeds were hanging on and it was largely thanks to the energy he brought to proceedings that United stole all three points with Jermaine Beckford’s injury-time goal.

Manager Simon Grayson revealed that he signed Gradel and striker Sam Vokes on loan on Saturday but kept them under wraps until just before kick-off time.

Grayson said: “Max is bright and bubbly. He gets on the ball and runs at people.

“He could be anything on his day. He could be good or he could be rubbish – he’s that type of player and you can live with that. It was his night against Norwich.

“He has his hair dyed down the middle and he’s got green boots on and you think ‘well, he’s got to be some player to do that’ – and when he came off the bench he looked a good player.

“I felt we needed a bit of pace in some of the wider areas. He can play up front as well and he is another who we feel will affect the team over the next few weeks.

“We only bring players in who we think will maybe be better than the ones we’ve got.”

That last sentence may send a shiver down the spine of Andy Robinson, Mike Grella and Enoch Showumni.

But all the time Leeds keep winning, the fans are delighted that Grayson has reversed the club’s former policy of ignoring loan deals.
