Leeds boss Simon Grayson has been pipped to the League One manager of the month award for August by Charlton’s Phil Parkinson.

Both managers’ teams had 100 per cent records from their five league games but relegated Charlton scored more goals and led the table at the end of the judging period.

While Charlton recorded wins over Wycombe, Hartlepool, Leyton Orient, Walsall and Tranmere, Leeds’ victories came against Exeter, Wycombe, Walsall, Tranmere and Colchester.

Grayson was shortlisted for the award along with Brentford’s Andy Scott and Paul Ince of MK Dons.

United lost their 100 per cent record from the start of the season when Southend held them to a goalless draw at Roots Hall on Friday night.

But it was enough to take them to the top of the table until Charlton returned to pole position on Saturday with a 1-1 home draw against Southampton.

Rui Marques missed the match with an Achilles tendon injury but Grayson hopes Ben Parker and Richard Naylor will be back in training with the first-team squad this week to step up competition for places in a defence that has yet to concede a goal from open play in League One this season.

Right back Jason Crowe limped off three minutes into the second half at Southend with a tight hamstring and is doubtful for Saturday’s home game against Gillingham.
