Winsford United 1, Silsden 3

Silsden returned from deepest Cheshire with all three points from their Vodkat League Premier Division clash with Winsford, much to the delight of boss Paul Schofield.

“It’s a long trip, we had a depleted squad and were under pressure for the fist 20 minutes but we showed a bit of character,” said Schofield.

“It is a good result for us because it is never an easy place to go to. We had to play a couple of people out of position because of the circumstances, so all in all it was a good day.

“Kevin Ryan got his first goals for the senior side and he could have had a hat-trick.

“After last week, when we had a dodgy penalty given against us, we had the luck on our side this time.

“Goals change games and we went 2-1 up ten minutes from time thanks to a penalty that was harsh on Winsford.

“A hand blocked a cross but their kid was unlucky because it was definitely ball to hand and he couldn’t get out of the way.”

The Cobbydalers opened the scoring in the 35th minute when a long throw-in was shielded by Sean Clifford in the area and Ryan came in to blast the ball home.

The hosts were level four minutes later when Silsden goalkeeper Danny Thorpe scuffed a clearance, the recipient found Craig Hoyland with a crisp pass and he curled the ball home.

Ryan had a second-half strike ruled out after the offside Peter Hanson decided to make sure the ball crossed the line, before Chris Simpson benefited from the gift of a penalty.

Not to be denied a second, Ryan fired home in the penultimate minute after good work from Harry Thompson and Simpson.
