Guiseley 2, Whitley Bay 0

Guiseley successfully overcame their first hurdle in this year’s FA Cup and will have one eye on tomorrow’s draw to see who they get in the second qualifying round after breezing past Saturday’s Northern League visitors.

It was a comfortable victory over Whitley Bay for the UniBond League outfit but it came at a cost.

Two definite injury doubts and a maybe will have darkened manager Steve Kittrick’s mood ahead of Tuesday’s Premier Division game against Nantwich Town at Nethermoor.

Guiseley broke the deadlock in the 12th minute when Anthony Lloyd’s cross from open play was converted by Steve Burton’s firm header.

It was the midfielder’s second chance after he had shot wide from a Craig Bentham through-ball minutes earlier.

More chances followed at a steady rate of knots but the visitors held out for the remainder of the first half.

The Lions doubled their advantage just seven minutes after the break with a solo goal from Jerome Fitzgerald.

He won the ball in his own half, went on a surging run and as he reached the area he was looking for team-mates in support.

But as the Bay defence backed off, awaiting the expected pass, Fitzgerald stunned everyone by lashing in a shot.

Burton was still a threat and he was denied a strong penalty claim on the hour.

Lee Tuck had two late efforts, including one in the last minute that was deflected over the bar by the boot of the visiting keeper.
