Katie O’Brien continued her fine form today as she took the $25,000 title in Sutton, ending the giant-killing run of Australian Johanna Konta in the final.

The tournament maintained former Woodhouse Grove pupil O’Brien’s impressive start to the year as she also qualified for last month’s Australian Open.

In her first four matches, O’Brien only lost 15 games, including thrashing fellow Brit Naomi Cavaday 6-1, 6-1 in the quarter-finals and then seeing off second seed Renata Voracova 6-3, 6-2.

Konta, who is hoping to switch to British nationality in May when she turns 18, came into the final with four succesive three-set victories, including a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 quarter-final score over top seed Corinna Dentoni.

Konta looked on course for another shock in the final but the experience and class of O’Brien told in what was her second career $25,000 title.

O’Brien lost the doubles final with Rebecca Marino.
