The frustrations of suffering four postponements over their last five fixtures were compounded for Guiseley ahead of Saturday’s trip to Cammell Laird when two players pulled up with injuries in training.

“You wouldn’t have thought that we would have any new worries but a couple of the lads suffered hamstring strains on Tuesday,” said assistant manager Wayne Benn.

“Danny Ellis and Jez Fitzgerald will be struggling for Saturday and James Cotterill (ankle) is also a doubt. With Ryan Crossley still out, that means four centre halves are on the treatment table.

“It’s a nightmare. You are missing games when you need them due to the weather and then when it improves there are players unavailable. It’s been a strange season, as whenever we have a few injured they are always from the same area of the pitch.

“Danny and Jez rested and Cotty did some jogging in our last session, so hopefully they won’t all be ruled out.

“We do have Simeon Bambrook back from his stint on the Gladiators TV show. He came back with a rib injury but he will join in training today.

“Alex Callery is also back in contention, so we will have to have a head count on Saturday morning.”

Benn believes the problems the squad have suffered makes the club’s second place in the table even more creditable.

A win against the struggling Lairds is needed to maintain their position but Benn warned against complacency.

“They are in trouble financially but they will have that siege mentality,” he said.

“The fact that they have lost their main sponsor will bring them even closer together. They have good players and that doesn’t change overnight.”
