Nick Colgan will find out if he has any future with City after tomorrow’s friendly against Bradford Park Avenue.

The Republic of Ireland keeper is eyeing a second pre-season appearance at Horsfall Stadium as he trains with Stuart McCall’s side.

Then Colgan will sit down with the City boss to see if he is still in the plans for next week’s Scotland tour.

He said: “Hopefully I’ll get some more game-time tomorrow before having a chat with Stuart to see where I stand.

“I’ve got a couple of other clubs I’m speaking to at the moment but Stuart was the first one to pick up the phone and offer me training facilities, which I’m really grateful for.

“He’s got a good coaching team around him in David Wetherall and Wayne Jacobs with a wealth of experience and, from looking at the lads in training, he’s trying to get a squad in place that’s going to challenge.

“Bradford are a good club and I’ve played against them on many occasions. If it leads to something for me then that would be wonderful.

“My family are settled in Yorkshire and that would be ideal but I also understand that you have to go where you’re wanted.”

His former Barnsley team-mate Paul Heckingbottom got Colgan the chance to work with City after the experienced keeper turned down the chance of a coaching position with Ipswich.

Colgan said: “It’s the first time for 17 years as a pro that it’s been this close to a season and I’ve not been on a contract.

“People think that at 34 you’ve earned enough money through your career but unless you are in the Premier League or have played at the top of the Championship for years then it’s difficult, especially for the family.

“Jim Magilton offered me a player/coach role at Ipswich but I’d always planned to play until I was 40. I still feel I’ve got plenty to offer just as a player.”

Wednesday’s loss at Farsley was not the City debut Colgan wanted, even though he could not be blamed for any of the home goals.

“To concede three in the first half of my first game for Bradford was obviously not an ideal scenario,” he said.

“I’ve got a manager watching who I want to impress and players around me I want to impress. I’m in a team that conceded three poor defensive goals and I’m part of that defensive unit.

“But pre-season games with all the chopping and changing are always a bit tasty when you’re playing teams from lower down the divisions.”

City’s squad had several absentees at Throstle Nest and only Heckingbottom is expected to return for the Bradford derby. But McCall does not plan to make as many changes during the game.

He said: “Playing twice prior to going to Scotland, we’ll split the two sides. It means the players involved will get 65-70 minutes rather than just a half.

“We’ve got a couple of the injured ones who are near but again you need to get some training in them before they play. It’s just a monitoring process and I want to take a strong squad for the Scotland trip.”
