FOUR legendary figures of Undercliffe Cricket Club are to be remembered in a memorial day at their Intake Road ground on Sunday, August 27 (11am start).

The quartet are Joan Peel, John White, Howard Reeve and John Armstrong.

White, who was also cricket chairman at Undercliffe, played for the club for over 20 years, as did Reeve, who was first XI skipper for three seasons.

Armstrong was on the club’s committee for more than 20 years and was club president for six years, but all of their service is dwarfed by Peel, who served Undercliffe CC for 70 years as club secretary, tea lady, you name it.

Both White and Armstrong died of prostrate cancer, so money will be raised on the day for both that and the Bradford Junior Cricket League, of which Peel was such a staunch supporter and who have named one of their trophies after her.

Peel died of old age at 92, while Reeve died of a heart attack.

“We know that Joan would be over the moon to know that we are raising money for the Bradford Junior League on her behalf,” confessed event organiser Mandy White, who is John White’s daughter.

“We know that the Bradford Junior League is not a charity, but it doesn’t run on fresh air.”

Four teams, who are a mixture of Undercliffe players old and new, members of Hawks Cricket Club and players who have progressed through the Bradford Junior League, will be taking part in a T10 competition.

Entry for the day is free, and the teams, who will be wearing coloured clothing, are Brucie’s Bashers (John White’s XI in mustard), Howard’s Heroes (green), John’s Jaguars (purple) and Joan’s Juniors (blue).

White added: “We are all getting very excited for what should be a fun-filled and special day. The four teams will be announced soon but we have 44 players who are all ready to represent the chosen teams.

“There will fun and games, with a climbing wall and an inflatable assault course, the tea-room will be open all day for food and refreshments, and from 9am to noon they will be selling bacon and sausage sandwiches for £1.50, while there will be a barbecue between 2pm and 5pm.

“We are running an auction and raffle, and we have some fantastic prizes in that, and also to bid on in the auction. There will also be a bucket collection.”

Among the auction prizes are a shirt signed by the 2023 Australian Ashes squad, courtesy of squad member Josh Inglis, who was born in Leeds; mini cricket bats signed by England stars Harry Brook, from Burley-in-Wharfedale, and Adil Rashid, from Heaton; plus a framed and signed Bradford Bulls shirt, a pair of PAYNTR cricket boots; two places on The Cricket School Ltd coaching camp, courtesy of Mark Gilliver; and some Ghd hair straighteners worth £190.

Raffle prizes include a meal for two at Aldo’s Italian restaurant; a meal for two at Napoleon’s Casino on Bolton Road, a remote-control kitchen blind, a £50 Amazon voucher and bottles of prosecco, gin, wine and Aperol spritz.

There will also be a tombola stand, with over 100 prizes.

The clubhouse will be open from 11am and there will be live music in the club from 7.30pm.

Match sponsors are Jimmy Poutch, Martin Patchett, Mark Hippey and Adam Miller.
