WASPS stopped play in a game at Hepworth & Idle on Saturday.

The Wynn Cup Group A & B match against Riddlesden was delayed for several minutes until it was clear that the swarm had passed.

“They came from over the scorebox,” said Hepworth & Idle’s opening bowler Alex Robinson, “and went over where the sightscreen should be at the far end of the ground.

“There were a lot of them, and it sounded like a drone. Someone shouted and all of the players hit the floor, while the square-leg umpire tried to run.

“I have seen something like it on the telly but never witnessed it live.”

Hepworth & Idle won the toss and made 195 in the mini-league clash, largely thanks to Nigel Poustie (44) and Jack Bedford (59) putting on 106 for the first wicket.

Riddlesden’s reply never really got off the ground – unlike the swarm – and they were dismissed for 109, with Jonny Thompson taking 3-26.

Wilsden’s Chris Mitchell took dominating an innings to another level, scoring 83 not out of the 90 needed at Airedale in just 9.1 overs, fellow opener Matthew D’arcy-Brain finishing on one not out from 21 balls.

Mitchell’s innings only took 34 balls and contained nine fours and seven sixes.

Airedale had earlier been dismissed for 85 after winning the toss, Sam Mitchell taking 3-13 and Bryn Pacey 3-18.

Eldwick & Gilstead are joint top with Long Lee after thrashing Haworth by nine wickets at Grange Road, toppling them for 79.

Ajeet Singh (3-32), Chris Child (3-32) and Matthew Rogers (3-21) shared the wickets.

Haworth dismissed Rob Unsworth early but that was their last success as Daniel Kilvington (30no) and Charlie Raistrick (40no) put on 70 unbroken.

Sutton are heading Group C & D with two wins out of two, dismissing hosts Bowling Baptist for 103 for who Hassan Mughal top scored with 25.

Skipper Dave Snowden then scored 57 not out to see Sutton to a seven-wicket victory inside 18 overs.

There was pain for both Hepworth & Idle III and Bowling Baptist II in the John Clayton Cup.

Joe Wood made 189 not out as Gargrave II racked up 307-4 at home to the Westfield Laners’ third string, Sam Bradbury taking 2-34, and the visitors were then castled for 63, despite Saeed Rehman making 23.

Sutton II breezed to a 10-wicket success at home to Bowling Baptist II, Jibin Raju (4-19) helping to restrict them to 148-9 (Nadeem Khan 50).

Skipper Craig Thornton (66no) and Jack Middleton (67no) then took Sutton home in the 32nd over.

Bradford & Bingley III had a successful day at Skipton CI II, dismissing them for 84, with Shahbaz Ahmed taking 4-13 and Farhan Khalid 3-7.

Bingley won by seven wickets in the 26th over, guided home by Sam Gokhale (28no).

Cononley should have beaten Bingley Congs III at Sandy Lane in the Cowling Cup, but the match ended in a tie on 91 runs each.

Congs had five players in double figures in their innings, but Andrew Starkey (25) and Charles Calvert (29) seemed to be taking Cononley to victory, only for late wickets to deny them.

Andrew Copping (3-1), Shahid Mahmood (3-17) and Sarfraz Mahmood (3-21) did the damage, but that is not the end of the story, as the rules were misread and a super over should have been bowled.

That will now take place before their league match at Sandy Lane on August 5.

Wilsden II conceded to both Airedale II and Keighley III in their home double header.
