BINGLEY swimmer Sophia Gledhill was the star of the show for City of Bradford at the Yorkshire Championships.

Not only did she win three silver medals, in the 50m and 100m backstroke and 400m individual medley, but she also claimed a superb gold in the 200m backstroke.

The event, held across two venues, the John Charles Centre for Sport in Leeds and Ponds Forge in Sheffield was a roaring success for City of Bradford in general.

They came home with 17 medals in total, an increase on last year’s tally, and a plethora of final placings.

There were two more gold medals for the club aside from Gledhill’s, with Alex Dunn and Isabelle Randhawa both taking top spot in the 50m freestyle for their respective age groups.

Dunn also finished in third place in the 100m breaststroke and was part of the girls 13 years and over 200m medley relay team who claimed a silver medal.

Her sister Rebecca was also part of this team.

Relative newcomer Randhawa, swimming in the 10-11 years events, also finished in third place in the 50m backstroke and butterfly events in her age group.

Swimming in the 17 years and over events, Gina Warrior, who was also part of the successful relay team, took silver in the 50m backstroke.

Rounding off the medallists in the girls events were Imogen Tiffany with a silver in the 16 years 50m breaststroke and 13-year-old Amy Hagyard, who won bronze in the 100m breaststroke.

In the boys events, it was 15-year-old Freddy Dean who came home with two bronze medals, in the 50m backstroke and freestyle.

He was joined in the age group by Robbie Ambler, who took silver in the 50m breaststroke, and Quinn-Austin Kelly, who finished in third place in the 100m breaststroke.

All swimmers train on the Bradford Aquatics Competition programme under the guidance of coaches Andy Pearce and Sarah Fisher.
