Dave Cameron is still confident Park Avenue can lift the title despite his side clinching just a point from their crunch double header.

Last Saturday's 2-0 defeat at leaders Curzon Ashton and a 0-0 draw at home to FC United of Manchester two days later was the first time the new boss had experienced anything but victory since taking charge.

It may have slowed Avenue's rampant promotion charge but they remain only three points off top spot with a game in hand ahead of Saturday's home game against Wakefield.

Cameron said: "I have been looking at the run-ins that the title chasers have and I think we have the best chance of the lot.

"It is still in our hands and we have the desire to go for it. There will be no let up from our side."

After stringing together seven league victories in his first seven games, Cameron admitted it was tough to finally experience the other side of the coin but was delighted with the way his players responded.

He said: "It was difficult to watch at Curzon because we were not playing well at all. That gave me a job to do in lifting the lads and they were brilliant on Monday.

"If FC United hadn't turned in their best performance of the season, we would have won it easily.

"They are a very good side and their manager said to me after the game that his players lifted themselves for the game.

"At Curzon we had Steve Connors, Paul Stoneman and Paul Gedman all out.

"That is the backbone of my team. It would be the backbone of any team in this division or even a couple higher.

"The defeat was not unexpected given that they were all missing, two with injury and Stoneman suspended."

After two games against title rivals and a West Riding County Cup final (which Avenue lost 6-0 to Harrogate Town) in the space of five days, Avenue have another busy week ahead of them.

After Wakefield, they host Bridlington Town on Monday before travelling to Newcastle Blue Star on Thursday and Woodley Sports a week tomorrow.

Cameron is hoping his talisman skipper Steve Connors is fit to return.

The midfielder has been missed but Gareth Morris, Ross Clegg and even Mark Hotte, who is renowned as a centre back, have all played in the centre in the captain's absence and proved able stand-ins.

Gedman is being used sparingly by Cameron as the striker is carrying a niggling injury but can get through 90 minutes if needed.
