CITY of Bradford had three representatives at the British Swimming National Summer Championships in Sheffield last month, with Gina Warrior producing the highest place finish.

She claimed 13th in the 16-years 50m backstroke in a time of 31.29, but also qualified to swim in the longer 100m and 200m events.

Rebecca Dunn, who had competed at this level previously, swam in the 17 years age group and claimed two top-20 finishes in the 100m and 200m breaststroke in times of 1.17.16 and 2.50.25 respectively.

With qualifying times also for the Swim England Championships, Bingley swimmer Sophia Gledhill tested the water in the 15 years 200m butterfly, finishing in 19th place in a time of 2.28.90.

At the start of this month, Gledhill, Alex Dunn and Samantha Knowles were City’s representatives at the high-level Swim England National Summer Meet.

They all produced outstanding performances, but it was Gledhill whose efforts rewarded her with a podium place.

Swimming in the 15 years age group 100m butterfly, she claimed a well-earned bronze medal with a new personal best time of 1.05.34.

With confidence high, she demonstrated her speed and finished in a very creditable seventh place in the 200m backstroke, in a time of 2.28.70.

Guiseley’s Alex Dunn concentrated on the sprint events and reached the final in the same age group, finishing in 7th place in the 50m freestyle in a new personal best time of 27.87.

She also claimed a top-20 finish in the 50m breaststroke.

Swimming in the 14 years age group and in her first national championships, Knowles finished 13th in the 50m backstroke in a time of 32.93.

All the swimmers train with Bradford Council’s Leisure Services Aquatic Competition Programme under the guidance of senior coach Andy Pearce and development coach Sarah Fisher.
