Dean Windass is backing Stuart McCall to make City a force again but warned: It will be a long haul.

Windass was delighted to see his old club chalk up their first win in nine games after their recent nightmare run of results.

And he is convinced former team-mates McCall and Wayne Jacobs can get City back on the right track.

"It's a very hard time for Stuart but he will succeed," said Windass, who was back in Bradford to sign copies of his autobiography.

"Stuart is a football man and Wayne is very intelligent as well and they will sort things out.

"Don't forget it's Stuart's first managerial job but there's no better one for him than Bradford because none of the supporters will get on his back.

"The only problem he's got is that everybody expects him to be a success and nowadays without money to spend in football it's hard to achieve anything.

"At least with the new joint-chairman coming in, Stuart hasn't got the financial worries which we had - but he needs to strengthen the squad and buy experienced players, which is difficult when they've not got the cash to spend.

"This season the aim should be to get as far as possible back up that table, then next year they should be favourites to go up."

Fans turned out in numbers at WH Smith's in the city centre to buy copies of his book Deano: From Gipsyville to the Premiership - and Windass, who left City to rejoin Hull in January, appreciated the response.

"I've done three book signings now and you always wonder if anyone will turn up but every time we've had loads there, which is really nice," he said.

"This club put me on the map and I always look for Bradford's results as soon as we've finished.

"If it wasn't for the supporters, who pay your wages, then none of this would ever happen."
