JOHN Kear will put substance before style as the Bulls aim to ruin Leon Pryce’s Odsal homecoming tomorrow.

With only five games left in the League One title tussle with York, victory at all costs will be the mantra for the hosts.

And Kear is not bothered how they go about clinching it.

“Coaches go on about performances,” he said. “But I couldn’t give a monkey’s at this stage of the season.

“All I’m bothered about is getting two points. That’s all that matters now.”

Sponsors Betfred have the Bulls at narrow 2/5 favourites to seal the automatic spot. York, who currently trail them by just 10 in points difference, are 7/4.

Pryce’s third-placed Workington could have a big say as they face both of the top two either side of the break for the Challenge Cup final.

Kear admits the free weekend after tomorrow’s game comes at an inconvenient time with the momentum building in his team’s performances since they were upset by the Knights a month ago.

He added: “I’d have preferred us not to have the week off because of how well we’re playing. I’d have liked us to keep banging on week in, week out.

“But that’s not to be, so the focus will be win by any means.

“We’ll attempt to take the two points against Workington and then make full use of the two weeks we’ve got in preparation for Keighley and that really important last block of four.”

Pryce is assured of a big reception from the Odsal faithful and Kear is impressed by how well he has done in his first year as a head coach. He also applauded Workington for backing him with good signings.

Kear said: “It’s a big jump (from player to coach) and I think it may well have helped Leon that it’s been in one of the outposts.

“He’s obviously got a fantastic reputation along the M62 with St Helens and Bradford and it would be easy for him to be comfortable among that cluster of clubs.

“He’s got out of his comfort zone and done very well indeed.

“I think the board have backed him as well.

“I know full well Olly Wilkes and Sean Penkywicz won’t have been cheap and I’m absolutely certain that Fuifui Moimoi won’t have been cheap.

“But Workington have given Leon that backing and he’s repaid their faith.

“He’s a Bradford lad and I’m sure it will be special for him being at Odsal again. I hope he enjoys his coming back before the game – but doesn’t enjoy the 80 minutes that much.”
