RAWDON Cricket Club will honour one the greats of cricket on Saturday.
A special plaque is being unveiled to commemorate the life of Yorkshire and England all-rounder Hedley Verity who came from the village and played his junior cricket at the club.
The ceremony will take place before their Aire-Wharfe League Division One game with Follifoot as the fixture is the nearest to the anniversary of his world record bowling feat of 10-10 for Yorkshire against Nottingham at Headingley on July12, 1932.
This year is also the 75th anniversary of Verity’s death while serving in World War Two.
Rawdon Parish council have funded the blue plaque which is being produced in conjunction with Aireborough Civic Society.
The wording on the plaque says, Hedley Verity, 18 May 1905 – 31 July 1943, Yorkshire and England cricketer, Rawdon CC, Yorkshire CCC, England. Lived in Rawdon and played his early cricket at Rawdon Cricket Club.
