JOHN Kear is pleased to see Dane Chisholm back on form with the boot.

The half-back is set to remain on kicking duties against Hemel on Sunday with Joe Keyes not due to return from his back injury until the Bulls host North Wales Crusaders next month.

The Aussie converted four out of four tries, including one from the touchline, plus a penalty in the victory over Newcastle.

It continued an up and down spell which saw Chisholm set a new club points record against West Wales only to kick poorly the following week against London Skolars.

Kear said: “That’s Dane for you. He kicked 20 out of 21 one week and five out of 11 the next. That’s Dane and you’ve got to ride it some weeks but this was a good week for him.”

Though Bulls were not at their best going forward against Newcastle, Chisholm played a key part in Bulls’ best attacking moments.

He set up their opening two tries before going over himself after a great run from Ross Peltier.

And Kear felt the artificial pitch at Kingston Park benefited Chisholm’s game.

He said: “It’s a high quality 4G pitch. There is some give in it and it is a fast track that suits people like Lewis Young and Theerapol Ritson (Newcastle’s stand-off and full back).

“I thought it suited Dane as well. He looked very evasive and the try he scored ultimately clinched the game. It was a cracker.”

Meanwhile, Keyes is progressing well but will not be rushed back unnecessarily, with his return pencilled in for Saturday, June 9 when Bulls host North Wales after a blank weekend.

Kear said: "We could play him against Hemel but we are going to wait until North Wales when he will be fully fit."
