GUISELEY are finding their return to Premier Division football hard going after kicking off the FA Women's Premier League with two successive northern section defeats.

But they have a change of scene tomorrow as they travel to Birmingham to face Solihull Moors in the League Cup.

After a narrow 1-0 defeat on the opening day, they faced a revitalised Huddersfield side who are sitting top of the table with two wins from two after a 6-0 thrashing of the Vixens.

Kate Mallin fired Town ahead after just four minutes and Emily Heckler added two more goals midway through the first half.

A more compact second-half display saw the Guiseley defence stand firm for 25 minutes – but it all went badly wrong in the last quarter of the game.

Town substitute Hannah Campbell, formerly with Bradford, came on in the 67th minute and scored in the 70th, Danielle Whitham then struck in the 72nd – coinciding with the sending off of Guiseley sub Charlotte Higginson – and Campbell made it six in the 79th as Guiseley took a caning.

In contrast, Brighouse Town have opened their campaign much as they finished the last – by winning.

After their 5-3 opening win at Newcastle, there was another goalfest at home to Bolton as they ran out 4-3 winners and are one of only three teams to win their first two games.

More former City players were at the forefront, with Jodie Redgrave (2) and Becky Kendell joining Charlotte Proud on the scoresheet as Brighouse led 4-1 at the break.

It was a different story in the second half, with Wanderers pulling two goals back, but the hosts held on to take all three points.

There was an interesting friendly in midweek as Thackley took on Tyersal in a game at Dennyfield that looked much like a Bradford City reunion.

It says much for the work that has gone on at City to encourage and develop women's football in the district that Thackley fielded what was a full squad of ex-Bantams players.

Half the Tyersal side were veterans of City's contests against the likes of Super League sides Arsenal and Manchester City more than a decade ago.

It was youth that won out as Vanessa Holroyd (2) and skipper Taylor Rushforth scored to secure a 3-0 verdict for Thackley.

West Riding League side Bradford Park Avenue open their competitive season tomorrow as they face Altofts in first round qualifying of the SSE Women's FA Cup.

Other West Riding teams in action are Yorkshire Amateur at Sheffield Wednesday, Wakefield away to Malet Lambert and Ossett Albion at home to Farsley Celtic in an all-North East Regional League clash.
