Yorkshire Men's League Division Two: Wibsey Warriors 6 Hunslet Club Parkside 44

WIBSEY Warriors suffered their first defeat of the summer campaign.

The Warriors gave as good as they got in the opening exchanges at Northfield Road against the vastly-experienced visitors, and were unlucky to have centre Jimmy Rodger held a foot short after excellent probing from scrum half Ryan Goldsborough.

Parkside struck the first blow on quarter time when full back Luke Medley made the extra man to cross and add the extras himself, but Wibsey were soon back on level terms when second-row forward Domenic Kilburn collected a cross kick and had the ball knocked out of his grasp in the act of touching down.

Referee Andy Kitson pointed immediately to the spot, leaving centre Brad Wright to slot the conversion. Goldsborough came within a whisker of reaching the chalk with a clever, jinking run before full back Paul Jennings was forced to pull off a splendid ankle tackle on Parkside loose forward Craig Mills to prevent what looked a certain score.

With half-time on the horizon, though, the Warriors imploded as the pace intensified.

Mills posted a quick brace with two pick up and burrows from acting half, and the Leeds visitors added further pain from the restart when scrum half Amraz Hamed finished off a long distance retort, leaving Wibsey to change ends 24-6 down.

Hunslet's pack, containing former Queensbury favourite Lee Kelly and veteran enforcer Carl Briggs, gained the upper hand against the fledgling home six on the restart, leading to another converted try, but the Wibsey youngsters doggedly stuck to the task in hand.

Substitute forward Chris Clough's neat side-step nearly brought reward, and their spirit was further emphasised when wingman Jack Cull bundled his opposite number into touch with a cracking try-saving tackle.

The pace alas once again took its toll on Wibsey in the closing stages as Parkside helped themselves to a further three touchdowns to manipulate a final total that failed to reflect the hosts' contribution to a fine game.
