Stuart McCall will not be rushed into making new signings despite the pressing need to strengthen his squad.

With pre-season training due to start on Thursday, there are currently only ten regular first-team squad members on the books from last season.

And the City boss has yet to make his first addition since arriving at the club three weeks ago.

But he said: "I'm not going to be rushed into bringing the wrong people in.

"I could go out today and bring six players in and three months down the line realise they are not the right ones."

McCall has so far been frustrated in his attempts to lure players from a higher level to play in League Two.

He said: "I am trying to get the best I possibly can into the club. But to come down a division if they have been playing in a level above, and for less money, is a hard decision to make.

"Players who are now free agents have three or four options and you have to give people time to think about what's best for them."

The City boss came close to tying up a full back on Thursday, only for the deal to fall through after a player in the same position at his club put in a transfer request.

McCall added: "I am realising how frustrating things can be but we have other irons in the fire."

He needs to fill both full back positions while strikers are also at the top of his priority list.

The departure of Dean Windass this week means Eddie Johnson is currently the only recognised centre-forward at the club, though he may be used in midfield after impressing there towards the end of last season.
