NATHAN Clarke is setting the example for those on the fringes of City’s first team by never complaining.

With the current depth of the squad at Phil Parkinson’s disposal, there will be some disappointed faces as City prepare for the next stage of their promotion push.

James Hanson can appreciate that frustration after only recently regaining his starting spot.

But he says defender Clarke’s professional reaction during his extended spells on the sidelines is the way to follow.

The former Leyton Orient skipper has proved an effective understudy for centre halves Reece Burke and Rory McArdle, filling in for both to start 23 times.

Hanson said: “One person you’ve got to look at when you’re out the side is Nathan Clarke.

“When he was out, he was doing extra in the gym and training ever so hard.

“Then when he got his chance, he took it. That’s how it should be for the lads out the side – keep working hard and you know you’ll get an opportunity sooner rather than later.

“That’s why everyone looks up to Nathan. He’s such a great lad to have around the place.

“He kicks up no fuss and just gets on with it.

“He’s the first in the dressing room to wish you all the best and you know he genuinely means it.

“We all have respect for him and I think that’s the path you’ve got to take when you’re not in the side.”
