BRADFORD Salem, who initially thought they were out and then believed they were through, have been ordered to replay their Yorkshire Shield quarter-final against West Leeds.

The teams drew 40-40 after extra-time at Blue Hill Lane on Tuesday, April 26 and Salem believed they had gone out 5-4 on tries scored (as is stipulated on the Yorkshire Referees' Federation website).

The match official had told the home side that if they kicked a penalty to level the final scores, they would qualify for a home semi-final against Pontefract on Saturday, May 14.

However, it emerged the following day that the tie-breaker should have been converted tries, which Salem edged 4-3, and has historically been the deciding factor in drawn games in the Yorkshire Cup, Yorkshire Shield and Yorkshire Silver Trophy.

Amid all the confusion, West Leeds appealed against that ruling and the upshot is a replay next Wednesday at Shay Lane, probably with a 7.30pm kick-off.

Salem first-team manager Neil Klenk said: "Most of our players feel that a replay is the correct decision.

"But we also feel that West Leeds should have known the competition rules, the relevant one here being rule 19, which haven't changed for years, rather than relying on the advice of the referee."
