Cleckheaton 37, Wirral 20
These two promoted clubs put on a great show for the crowd as Cleckheaton gained an SSE National League Three North bonus-point win in a game which could have gone either way until the strong home pack asserted their superior strength in the last quarter.
Two first-half penalties from Wirral captain Craig Harvey were countered by two tries for Cleckheaton by Rob Afoa Peterson and Ross Hayden, the latter adding one conversion, and five minutes from the break Matt Piper dropped a goal from 30 metres.
Wirral hit back immediately after the break with two converted tries from Alistair Baker and Julian Haigh, while Cleckheaton winger James Wilson was in the sin bin for a high tackle.
Cleckheaton regained their composure on Wilson's return and ran in three excellent tries from Martin Woodhead and Hayden (2), who completed his hat-trick, with Jarrad Toulson adding two conversions.
