Meredith signs new deal with Bradford City

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: James Meredith puts pen to paper at City's training ground James Meredith puts pen to paper at City's training ground

James Meredith this afternoon signed a new one-year deal to stay with City.

The Australian ended a summer of uncertainty over his future by committing himself to another season at Valley Parade.

Meredith missed the first week of pre-season training but was back at Apperley Bridge with the squad this morning.

He missed nearly four months of last season with a broken foot, returning in time to make two substitute appearances in the final three games.

But Meredith will have a fight on his hands to regain the left-back slot after the recent signing of Notts County skipper Alan Sheehan.

Great news, good to have James still with us, good also to have competition for the left back position and both Meredith and Sheehan are versatile and can play in midfield and central defence respectively.

Great to have you back on board JM!!!!!

Maybe one of the Championship teams who were looking at signing him(Meredith's comments in the T&A) want him another season at league one level to make their minds up, you really need another agent James.

great news, very good player. However i do hope he is going to give 100% due to how long it took him to sign the contract, but the competition for the left back place is good!

We need a number 1 keeper regardless of whether J mac stays or goes. He can then be back as understudy as having no competition like last season lead to a number of poor goals conceded and I reckon complacency could be put down to that.

Why wouldn't he give 100%, If he has his eye on a move to the champ, only way he'll get one is to give 100%.

In what way would such complacency manifest?

Whether it be sport of otherwise, any professional is at liberty to choose their next career move at appropriate intervals.

It could be argued that it is better that he has thought his situation through rather than rushing to sign a contract that he may later regret.

Mez re-signing normally would be a good move, but surely not after we have signed his replacement. Seems a strange move to me. We are supposed to be operating on a much smaller budget ! Where is he going to play ? In midfield ? or is Sheehan going to play there ? But we have signed 3 new midfield players so that area is covered ? is he any good in goal ? I know he's a good player but personally I think h chance had gone, will be interesting to see what hapens

We have a number one keeper. There's no way JM, as the club's longest serving player, would stay to be an understudy. Anyone coming in will have to try to displace him and that would mean reaching balls in training that Jonny doesn't get to, an achievment that would be considerably harder to attain than some untrained amateur assessors of JM's performances realise.

Could consider Meredith wide left and Sheehan at left back...left side appears very strong now with Clarke, Knott and Dolan all favouring that side...just need to sort out wide right midfielder. ..Does throw down the gauntlet to Yeates and De Vita to properly demonstrate their worth for the coming season...Hanson, McLean, Clarke and McBurnie likely to compete well up front, a strong midfield now with Liddle also on board....Taylor pushing Davies and McCardle...and captain Darby at the helm...with others to come? Just need a cracking keeper! Jon?

Sheehan can also play centre back so that is something.

Regarding Jon Mc, l think he needs competition and keep him on his toes if he stays but l have my doubts about him. It's no good getting a kid to warm the bench again as he won't push him for contention.

If it was me I wouldn't play mezza as a make shift left winger I couldn't see it working. With what we have right now with no wide players you'd have to go narrow diamond with knott on left, dolan on right possibly Yates if he's up to it and Clarke at the head with liddle in a defensive role similar to what Liverpool did last year

So, we can sign 3 new central midfielders to add to Kennedy, but we can't sign 2 left-backs? This thread is full of people saying Jon Mc needs competition, but you don't think it worthwhile to have 2 good left-backs on the books?

Personally, I think this is a good signing. PP had already said we wanted 5 players and left-back cover was always going to be one of them. Just need a striker (quick pacy one), a couple of wingers and another keeper (two if Jon Mc moved on)

Pleased he has signed, but you can't help feel he's been poorly advised; holding out for that supposedly better offer, and as a consequence I wouldn't be surprised to see him start the season as 2nd choice left back.

Jameson wasn't a kid, he's 24. He did push JM, but as Phil Parkinson said, he didn't get a chance because Jon was so consistent.

In a recent Radio Leeds interview, Parky said that Sheehan just shaded it over Meredith; in a way that suggested a decision had been made.

I do not think Parky anticipated the return of Meredith at that point. Had he done so, I don't think such comments would have been made.
