DEFENDER Matthew Bates has joined Hartlepool following his departure from City at the end of last season.

The 27-year-old former Middlesbrough trainee becomes Pools boss Colin Cooper's first signing of the summer.

Bates was told he would not be getting a new deal at City after playing 23 times last season, mainly filling in when Andrew Davies was injured.
