Old pals act for Bantams new-boy Alan Sheehan
ALAN Sheehan became City’s fourth summer signing yesterday and looked forward to being reunited with some old friends.
The 27-year-old left back followed Matty Dolan, Billy Knott and Gary Liddle into Valley Parade and his arrival cast huge doubt over James Meredith’s future.
Meredith, who is currently back home in Australia, is out of contract and his offer of a new deal, on what were believed to be improved terms, expired on June 16 and boss Phil Parkinson has now snapped up Sheehan.
The former Republic of Ireland Under-21 international began his career at Leicester and had spells with Mansfield, Leeds, Crewe, Oldham and Swindon before joining Notts County in 2011.
The Magpies tried to re-sign Sheehan and Gary Liddle but both men opted to join the Bantams, where their contracts begin on July 1.
Sheehan, who captained Notts County last season, has also played with Stephen Darby and Mark Yeates at Swindon and Leicester respectively.
The set-piece specialist said: “Gary is a brilliant signing and it just shows the ambition the manager has when we are signing a player like him.
“He is a tremendous professional and you always want players like him in your team.
“He is a great lad, and if you had eleven Gary Liddles in your side, you’d be doing well in the league.
“Me and Darbs got to the play-off final with Swindon in 2010. He is a good player and a great pro and I’m looking forward to seeing him again.
“Yeatesy’s a good pal of mine and I’ve known him for a number of years now. He is a player with a lot of talent.
“He can be a very exciting player and one I’m looking forward to see playing.”
Sheehan said he was impressed with Parkinson’s ambition and added: “When I spoke to the manager, he told me the plans he had for the club.
“He didn't really need to sell the place to be honest though, everyone knows what a big club Bradford are.
"I'm delighted to be part of the manager's plans here. I can't wait to get started now with pre-season and to meet all the boys.”
