Steve Patterson made Yorkshire’s only breakthrough of a frustrating first morning of their County Championship match against Sussex at Arundel.

The Yorkshire seamer struck with his first ball to remove opener Chris Nash after Sussex won the toss and reached a threatening 104-1 at lunch.

Already missing three players - Joe Root, Gary Ballance and Liam Plumkett - on England duty for the first Test against Sri Lanka at Lord’s, Yorkshire were also without Adil Rashid on paternity leave.

It gave off-spinner Azeem Rafiq his first Championship outing since facing Warwickshire at Headingley last August - but his long-awaited comeback was almost cut short after only 10.3 overs.

Running to chase the ball in the outfield, Rafiq collapsed after appearing to twist his ankle badly and limped back to the dressing room for treatment, although he reappeared 25 minutes later.

By then Patterson had broken Sussex’s 48-run opening stand after replacing Tim Bresnan from the Park End and striking with his first ball when Nash followed a ball outside off-stump and edged behind for 28.

Yorkshire’s only other opportunity presented itself shortly before lunch when Rory Hamilton-Brown edged Patterson to second slip but Adam Lyth was unable to take the chance.

Hamilton-Brown survived to reach 41 at lunch, including a straight six off Rafiq’s first over, while opener Luke Wells had progressed at a more leisurely pace to an unbeaten 32.
