Former Bantam Gary Jones linked with Fleetwood

Gary Jones applauds the City fans after his final game for the club against Tranmere

EVERGREEN Gary Jones may be on course for a return to Valley Parade next season – with League Two play-off champions Fleetwood.

The ambitious Lancashire side are preparing for their first-ever campaign in the third tier after a fairytale climb which has seen them promoted six times in ten years.

Boss Graham Alexander feels the Cod Army squad that pipped Burton in last month's Wembley decider is strong enough to compete at the next level.

But he is looking to add one or two more experienced faces and former City skipper Jones, with nearly 700 appearances under his belt, is believed to be on the Fleetwood radar.

Jones, who recently turned 37, is confident he has one more season in him after leaving the Bantams – where he played exactly 100 times in two years.

Meanwhile, Phil Parkinson has not ruled out the possibility of bringing in another "golden oldie" in his Valley Parade revamp.

The City chief said: "It's always good business to get players in and around that mid-20s age group as the core of the team to build on.

"But obviously there will be one or two exceptions. We had that with Gary Jones, who did such a fantastic job, and there might be another player of that ilk this year."

Veteran left back Adam Drury could fit that tag should City decide to make him a permanent offer after last season's 12-game loan stint.

Drury, a free agent after being released by Leeds, is likely to be one of the names under consideration as the club wait to hear whether James Meredith will sign his new deal.

Parkinson revealed that potential replacements have been sounded out while the Australian ponders his options.

Mat Sadler, who turned down the chance to stay at Crawley, and Notts County captain Alan Sheehan are others who could be in the mix.

Sadler has not missed a league game for four years – a remarkable run of over 200 on the bounce since January 2010. Steve Evans has played down rumours of Rotherham's reported interest in him.

Sheehan, a team-mate of new City recruit Gary Liddle at Meadow Lane, has been linked with Sheffield United.

The transfer targets seem to suggest we're competing with teams at the bottom of the league not top of the league as has been suggested.

Drury would be a great addition to the squad we now need a good left sided winger if Reach is available on loan that would be even better but we also need another goalkeeper.

Next season will be one of the most even ever. All the teams in it are at a similar level of ability and have similar financial constraints. It will all turn on consistency and keeping a settled team. The difference between the top and bottom will be a hair's breadth.

I agree. When we played Swindon, way back in1977, the Swindon suporters gave Peter Downsborough a standing ovation at the beginning of both halves and at the end. It would be great if we could do the same for Gary Jones if and when he comes back as an opponent. It would finish things off nicely if we could say the goodbye we didn't get to give him at the end of last season. He always wore the City shirt with such pride and it wasn't his choice to have to go elsewhere to ply his trade.

I, too, am gutted that we've lost McHugh. He was the future of the club. He never let us down and, with Dava's injury problems, he'd have been an important member of the squad next season.

He can't have been on big bucks and I can't help feeling it's a massive blunder.

Carl McHugh has left the Coral Windows Stadium to join Sky Bet League 2 side Plymouth Argyle.

McHugh completed his move to Plymouth's Home Park this Monday having signed a two-year deal with the Pilgrims.

The Irishman will officially move to Plymouth on a free transfer at the start of next month after the expiry of his City contract.

Following his move to Plymouth, McHugh becomes the fourth member of the famous 'history-makers' squad from the memorable 2012/2013 season to leave the club this summer after Gary Jones, Garry Thompson and Nathan Doyle also departed during the off-season.

McHugh made 44 appearances in two seasons for the Bantams after joining the club in August 2012.

Undoubtedly McHugh's most famous outings in the colours of City came during the club's tremendous run through to the 2013 Capital One Cup Final.

McHugh started in each one of City's famous cup triumphs over Wigan Athletic, Arsenal and Aston Villa, playing a key role in each tie.

The 21 year-old certainly made a lasting impression on the Bantams faithful when he scored a superb header in the dying minutes of City's first leg semi-final against Villa to crucially give Parkinson's squad a vital 3-1 advantage going into the second leg.

Having helped City finish the job off in the second leg on a mind-blowing night at Villa Park, McHugh was rewarded with a start in the Capital One Cup Final against Swansea City in front of over 80,000 at Wembley Stadium.

As memorable as McHugh's bullet header against Villa in front of the Sky Sports cameras was though, the goal certainly wasn't a one-off thing for the young Irish defender, however.

McHugh, who became renowned for his brave and committed displays at either left back or centre half, did in fact score all four of his City goals with his head, including an important late winner over Port Vale last season.

During his time at City, McHugh also earned his first under 21 caps for the Republic of Ireland and was awarded the Football League Young Player of Month for January 2013.
