Senior success key for Denholme's Rebekah Tiler in Commonwealth Games selection

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: Rebekah Tiler Rebekah Tiler

Rebekah Tiler certainly wasn’t counting her chickens when it came to selection for the Commonwealth Games this summer.

The 15-year-old weightlifter from Denholme confessed that she was only convinced about competing in Glasgow when she became the youngest female to win a British senior title just under a month ago.

“People were coming up to me and saying ‘You will be going’ or ‘You are good’ and then I started thinking about the Games,” admitted the Bingley Grammar School pupil (pictured).

Rebekah has been confirmed in the women’s 69kg category and, although optimistic noises have been made by British Weight Lifting about her medal chances, she is under no illusions about the task.

“I will be competing against 30-year-olds,” said the teenager, “and there will be anything from ten to 20 people in my section.

“I am expecting my main competition to come from the Nigerians but all I can do is achieve a personal best, enjoy the whole experience and hope that things go well.”

According to British Weight Lifting, Rebekah “is one of England’s strongest medal contenders”.

She heads to Scotland on the back of getting silver at the European Youth Championships in April before that British senior title in Coventry.

Britsh Weight Lifting are taking 16 athletes - nine male and seven female - to the Games, with 14 competing in weighlifting and the other two in para-sport powerlifting.

Among Tiler’s team-mates will be 2014 British senior champion and London 2012 competitor Zoe Smith.

Smith, who won a bronze at the 2010 Games in Delhi, will be England’s only representative in the women’s 58kg class, as both Emily Godley and Sarah Davies go head-to-head in the 63kg category. Mercy Brown will compete in the women’s 75kg class.
