Bradford Bulls 20, Wakefield 12

Adrian Purtell scored twice as the Bulls claimed a potentially priceless win over Wakefield at a tense Odsal this afternoon.

The Australian centre, who is enjoying a fine season, struck twice in the first half either side of a well-worked score from Tom Olbison.

Luke Gale was instrumental in all three tries and converted two of them to put his side 16-0 up at the break in front of a crowd of 6,249.

It was a thoroughly deserved lead for Francis Cummins’ men, who were bolstered by the return of five key men in Matt Diskin, Matty Blythe, Chev Walker, Jamal Fakir and Dale Ferguson.

The Wildcats, who included four ex-Bradford players in Nick Scruton, Jarrod Sammut, Richard Moore and debutant Lee Gilmour, had plenty of possession in the first half but lacked ideas.

They scored five minutes after the break, however, when Richard Mathers sent Matt Ryan over the line and Sammut converted to cut the gap to 10 points.

Yet the visitors soon lost Moore to the sinbin after he sparked a mass brawl and two penalties from Gale gave Bradford further breathing space.

Ryan scored his second late on but the Bulls held on for a deserved win which lifted them to within six points of Richard Agar’s side ahead of their crucial points appeal hearing on Wednesday.

In a statement posted on the club's official website on Saturday evening, Green said: said: “Sunday's game is unarguably the most important game since the Bulls overcame Wests Tigers to clinch the World Club Challenge crown, the club's last major success, back in 2006. Some would argue even more so.

“As a board of directors, we are extremely excited about what today may hold for us. A victory could prove crucial as we battle to secure our top-flight future.

“We are extremely confident, with the talent present within the team and with the players returning from injury today, we can achieve a result. Furthermore we believe there is now enough in our ranks to reach our goal of Super League survival by the end of the season.

“If we could live in the past, tomorrow's game would not be as crucial as it is but I am not going to speak publicly about all which has gone before me. Earlier in the week I called upon our supporters to create a cauldron of noise this weekend and everyone who turns out warrants huge recognition.

“I hope our fantastic supporters will join us, on Sunday afternoon, in getting behind Francis Cummins and his players. It could prove a turning point in our 2014 Super League campaign and, with your backing, I am confident we can ensure that is the case.

“Be under no illusion, I am completely red, amber and black – through and through. I am totally committed to returning this club to glory. In the two months I have been here we have focused, as a business, on the things we can control and the things which can benefit us.

“One thing I am keen to impress on all supporters, contrary to recent comments, is my desire to see this famous club succeed again. I would like to once again make my intentions clear.

“Anybody who believes my sole purpose for taking this club on was to recoup the money it owed and still owes me is under the wrong impression.

“If it should transpire this club is relegated, I will not run for the hills. I will remain in the box seat and will ensure a return to Super League in the quickest time possible.

“It would be too easy to buy any players at any cost, however, as most of you will be aware, it is this bad business sense which contributed towards the business failing once before and neither I, nor my co-directors, will allow these mistakes to be made again.

“Every person we bring to this club, whether player, coaching staff, or any other department will be based on a correct fit and rationale rather than an emotional, knee-jerk decision.

“In the two months which have passed we have worked tirelessly to strengthen the first-team squad, bringing in six new players in the space of nine weeks. All of the newcomers, we believe, have added real strength and quality to our ranks.”

12:18pm

Bulls owner Marc Green has spoken of his confidence that the club can stay in Super League but insisted it would not be disastrous if they failed to do so...

12:18pm

Victory is vital for Francis Cummins' side as they look to close the gap on Wakefield to six points...

12:17pm

Welcome to the Provident Stadium for today's match between the Bulls and the Wakefield Wildcats...

Your current owner put you into admin to take control of the club and to stick 2 fingers up at all creditors except himself.
Why should the Bulls get points back on that basis?
No other club has gone into admin this year so why should the Bulls have points returned when others have fallen within the rules.

First part successfully completed now for the six points. Then the relegation battle gets interesting which is what the RFL want. Odds on the points are coming back although beating a Wakefield side missing seven regulars by 8 points at home doesn't mean we are home and dry no matter what Jimmy Lowes says.

Your absolutely right axelf about nil points back next week after all this a conspiracy by the league, this should have been sorted out months ago but the league been the league has waited to after these easier games before the decide how many points to give us back or not in our case. Now we have won this week the league will award us no points back. It STINKS!
Your current owner put you into admin to take control of the club and to stick 2 fingers up at all creditors except himself.
Why should the Bulls get points back on that basis?
No other club has gone into admin this year so why should the Bulls have points returned when others have fallen within the rules.
You're back, and once more the assumptions you make are always to the detriment of the Bulls. How do you know what Marc Green did or didn't do, and whatever is decided is not for your sort of judgement to be relevant as you nor I would know what actually led up to the Admin.
May I suggest you ,like everyone that has posted on here, wait and see what happens at the specially convened tribunal?
Marc Green said himself he put the club into admin. Thats how I know what he did. Please keep up.
He did it to protect his money as HMRC had come in with a winding up order. All these are know facts that can be found in the public domain or attributed to direct quotes from those involved.
I can't believe your still in denial at it all.

TVOR Calm down dear. Its nothing to do with you. Why spend your life worrying about it? I don't and i'm actually a Bulls fan!

If we get relegated, then so be it. We'll still have a club, much to your annoyance
