Jonny Bairstow became the third Yorkshire batsman to start the season with a century after reaching three figures before lunch on the third and final day of their friendly against Leeds/Bradford MCC Universities at Headingley.
In making 123 off 156 balls, including 12 fours and three sixes, the England wicketkeeper followed Adam Lyth and Gary Ballance as the hosts, in reply to 139, advanced their first innings to 454 all out.
Yorkshire started the day on 366-5, and they lost Dan Hodgson, Liam Plunkett, Ryan Sidebottom, Bairstow and Jack Brooks in the morning session.
After Bairstow and Hodgson shared 64 for the sixth wicket, the latter was run out at the non-striker’s end by a Zafir Patel throw from short fine-leg. Plunkett was later caught at mid-off by Peter Ross at the second attempt off the off-spin of Alex MacQueen.
Bairstow brought up his hundred, his tenth in first-class cricket, off 134 balls with nine fours and three sixes. All of his sixes came against MacQueen, two of them arrow straight down the ground.
Sidebottom was the eighth wicket down when he was caught at cover by Ivan Thomas off MacQueen before Bairstow was caught at mid-wicket by Will Vanderspar and Brooks holed out off MacQueen, who finished with 4-116.
