Parkin hails professional display as win lifts Bantams into top half of table

James Hanson headed City in front at Colchester to help them bag a vital three points

Steve Parkin saluted City for a classic away display as they eased fears of being sucked into the relegation dogfight by beating Colchester.

The Bantams claimed their first win on the road since November as goals from James Hanson, who passed a late fitness test, and Kyle Bennett saw off Phil Parkinson’s old club.

The victory over a side who had been only two points behind lifted them back into the top half of League One – and assistant boss Parkin felt the scoreline should have been more emphatic.

He said: “It was a thoroughly professional away performance. There were a lot of good things defensively and a lot of great things attacking-wise.

“Maybe we could have done with a few more goals but the way we broke and passed it round on a tricky pitch was very pleasing.

“We’ve not always seen that over the last few weeks so that’s why it’s given us a lot of delight. We know it’s in there but confidence is a big thing.”

Aaron Mclean looked a threat but is still to break his goal duck after ten games. He had several chances last night, including one great opportunity set up by Bennett just before half-time.

“We’re confident that Aaron will score goals,” added Parkin.

“The one thing we were worried about is that he’s not had a lot of football and sometimes it’s very difficult to catch that up.

“But he is working tremendously hard to do that. He worked his socks off and just could have done with a goal.

“He probably should have had one but that will come. He looks like he is getting fitter and sharper and getting on the end of things, which he didn’t when he first arrived.

“I’m sure him and Hanson will be a real threat.”

After losing at Brentford on Saturday, City took the decision to go down to Essex the day before. Parkin felt the benefits of travelling early and staying overnight made a big difference.

“No players go out there and deliberately play poorly or don’t give a lot of effort. There were a lot of tired legs after Saturday and it was a case of trying to pick them up.

"We could have driven down for five hours on the day of the game or got them into a hotel and monitored everything properly.

“There are a lot of new players and we’re trying to build that team spirit – and there was an abundance of that in our performance.”

City are now eight points ahead of the bottom four as they prepare for Saturday’s visit from Gillingham and a Valley Parade reunion with Peter Taylor.

Parkin said: “It was a case of putting some distance between us and Colchester and now we can start looking at clawing back a few teams above us.

“Gillingham are doing really well at the moment but if you look at the span of five matches, we’ve won three and should have beaten Stevenage after being in front twice.

“We’ve got Andrew Davies and Hans back in the team and it was great to see him get that goal because he’s been struggling with his groin.

“The fans were terrific and we need them. When VP’s full and rocking, it puts an extra yard on the players’ distances and adds to their confidence.

“Saturday will be good. I know Peter, he’s a good fella and he’s got an appetite and that burning ambition to keep going like we all have.”

HOWEVER, I predict McLean will infact "GET A GOAL" this week?!...... Yes....hes training on his own on Friday ....NO GOALKEEPER!. "ONE" of his 750 shots will HIT THE TARGET!.....As Parky has ordered NEW SUPER SIZE GOALS!!.

He's referring to the magical safety line of 50 points.

I'll feel better when we are past that as teams have gone down on that before, at the moment, nobody has ever been relegated from this division on 52 points so we should be aiming for that at least.

No Shaun you predicted meltdown as you always do. Remember you said City had no decent players apart from Nahki Wells. It was you who said that. It is well known to readers of this message board that you do not rate anyone at the club. You have been saying that for years. However, the shining light from this constant negativity is that you donate money to the chairmen, manager and players whom I support. I thank you for that and appreciate the money you send to City. Please stop shouting. Your negativity comes across perfectly clearly without raising your voice.

Great Result Boys!! Listened on the radio and the Bantam army out sang the home team once again!
As much as i admire Jones, his leadership, his 110% put in every game, i feel IMO we desperatley needed to freshen up the midfield. Jones looked Knackered on Sat (The illness reported could be part of the reason). Dolan comes in and took his chance to shine, (Keep him in for Sat PP).
Drury at LB gave the back four that balance we have been missing since Meredith got injured.
Just need to get "Goal Machine Mclean" scoring and we will defo finish mid/Top half of the table come May.

Well, you've got that wrong as well. I it really takes a massive effort for some people to overcome their imbedded negativity. To criticise a player who has not even kicked a ball for City is inexcusable. Somebody described Adam Drury as a shocking panic buy. The guy has arrived on loan for a month. The signing was dismissed because the player is 35 years-old. The manager was criticised for signing the player. It was said this was a truly shocking signing. Who said this? Who knows what will happen to the player? But to criticise the signing when someone knows absolutely nothing about the player (apart from his age) is ridiculous. Oh and City won last night, so lets criticise a former manager. Negativity is the only mindset some people possess.

I love your approach Whisky, however, I fear that "balance, consideration and understanding" are a bridge too far for some who post on here. If we win they either go silent or think we are on for promotion and if we lose there appears to be a desperate search for a reason (or a scapegoat).

At least you can choose to ignore them on here. There are regular morons at VP slagging off some player or other (there is a guy sat in the top tier of the kop who slagged off Hanson for months until the Villa win and now he barely celebrates if Hanson scores...it's actually funny! There were also a couple of utter ****** who were flicking V's at PPas he left the pitch at Brentford. Why do they bother coming.

At over £5k a week you would hope it would be it would be NOW! rather than sooner or later!...Although YOU don't seem to mind???. AMAZING!!.

quick to judge, 10 games? yeah really quick! 5 grand a week is a lot at this level. should be paid by how many goals you score. incentive required!

Whisky1. You are wasting time and energy if you are allowing yourself to be wound up. The best policy (as Knight mentioned) is to completely ignore. That is what gets to such individuals.

Take Peter300. He always advocates for the club but is somehow construed as the person making negative comments!

His downside is that he sometimes does not always read beneath the surface and so misinterprets the meaning of what has been written. Given his obvious knowledge, it is quite frustrating that he restricts his output to unilateral statements rather than getting involved in a decent discussion.

It is not beyond the realms of possibility that City could make a late charge for the final play off spot.

Relegation fears receding.

Eleven points in eleven games (including a six-pointer against a team distracted by a Wembley appearance).

City known to thrive once on a roll.

Best of all, the though of negative posters being humiliated (that is wishful but wouldn't it be fun?).

Why is the salary relevant? Is McClean deliberately not scoring because of the salary?

Perhaps Diego Forlan was also appalling or Fernando Torres.

As I have tried to explain to the short of intelligece, teams score goals. McClean has had very little to go at in terms of chances so perhaps it should be the team getting criticised for his lack of goals. If McClean wasn't a) trying or b) contributing then perhaps morons like you would have some reason to slate one of our players...

....lets face it Shaun, the favoure outcome for you is clearly that "Shaun is proved right", for the slightly less numb, the favoured outcome is that McClean starts scoring. You couldn't see the potential of PP or the players last season though so no point expecting you to see it now.

How is Deadbeat doing with City sat in 11th place in league one...you never gave him a chance...

That's it LONNIE you talk to PETER!

City have not scored a lot of goals fair enough and Mac has scored nil but has he been involved in any assist's? Mac is member of the forward pack and all the bits add up to a good player. He will score many goals in the future and hopefully make a lot more. Get off his back and just support the team. Don't think City are ready for the playoffs but they could make them, look at Sheffield Utd, they were in the bottom four a few short weeks ago and now they are shooting up the table. Brentford also were quite lowly early days but they strung a lot of wins together , just look at them now too. Go City .

Are you saying that only the well paid should score goals. Why not slate the very expensive Davies for his defending against Stevenage. What about Jones giving Donaldson free reign to score from distance on Saturday. Its a team game you fool...with Mclean we have won 3 out of 5.

I note that as usual you have response to anything in my post. You are truly a fool.

Yes he actually assisted 3 in one match alone. His all round play is getting better and as for the chance he missed the other night many a top striker havemissed from that position. Wells has missed easier chances thats what strikers do. Andy Cole was slated for the amount of chances he missed before taking one and he was deemwd deemed prolific. Soon as the monkey is iff his back watch the goals flow

Any one went to Colchester?

I was there. Got to agree with Shaun - McLean was truly terrible and SP said he had one of his better games!? He lacks pace, first touch poor and when he did get a chance - totally messed up! We can only hope it is a lack of fitness but as the guy behind me kept reminding everyone he's maybe another McGinlay.

Reach was disappointing - hasn't got Reid's pace and I don't think he beat his man once. Bennett looked ok and Dolan was impressive. Drury did a job and as usual Davo immense.

As for performance - in truth Colchester were a very poor side and once 2-0 we sat back and allowed them to boss proceedings but they never looked like scoring. I think we should survive but major surgery will be necessary if we are even to survive next season - my concern is that PP has hardly the best track record in transfers over the past windows. Apart from his initial signings of Davo and Reid and the summer 2012 Meredith, McArdle, Darby and Jones ( although PJ had wanted to sign him) - the cupboard is a bit bare of success in this area.
