Bradford schoolgirl Emelye O’Brien was to the fore as Farsley-based Leeds Karate Academy made an excellent start to 2014.

The Academy, who have a full-time dojo, took 22 members to the internal JKS England Squad tournament and won ten medals.

Emelye won the girls’ kumite for the second successive year, with Kate Lister getting a bronze, and shared a bronze with Melissa Finlay in the female kumite, which was won by JKS England captain Ashley Scott.

Oliver Deane took gold in the boys’ kumite, and the other Farsley win came via Joe Hart (pictured) in the male kumite, where his fast head kicks were potent.

Silvers went to Oliver Deane (kids’ kata) and James Brown (adult kata), while David Lister was a bronze medallist in the boys’ kumite.

Meanwhile, Emelye was one of 11 club mates who have been selected for the junior JKS England kumite elite squad.
