Former player of the year Luke Oliver leaves Bradford City

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: Luke Oliver Luke Oliver

Luke Oliver has left City after agreeing to cancel his contract early.

The decision allows the big defender to become a free agent - and he is expected to link up with Conference side Forest Green.

The popular Oliver, 29, first joined City on loan from Wycombe in March 2010 under Peter Taylor. After a difficult start, he won over the supporters to such an extent that he swept the board at the player of the year awards in 2012.

But he suffered a shattering blow the following October, rupturing an Achilles tendon which ruled him out for the rest of the campaign - missing both of City's trips to Wembley.

He returned in time for pre-season but has made just four appearances since the club were promoted. He played 119 games in total, scoring three goals.

good luck big man: I believe you were the right man to accompany Davies but not to be. Forest Green are going places and it is a good move for you

Two of the nicest blokes you'd ever wish to meet have left the club in the last few days.

I send my sincere best wishes to all three who've exited the club. Alan Connell was signed by PP, who then didn't know how to accommodate him in the team. Luke Oliver, player of the season, the season before last, fought back from a serious injury and never let the side down on the few occasions he was called upon thereafter. Ricky Ravenhill always gave 100% when called upon and, if this season should end in a relegation dog fight, Ricky would have been the man you'd want in the trenches.

If any of them should return to VP with their visiting teams in the future, they'll be assured of a warm welcome back.

No, I assumed he was referring to Bates and Taylor

Good luck Luke, you did a great job for BCFC until your terrible injury, you never really got a chance after that which is a shame as I believe you are a better central defender than the lad brought in from Charlton.

All the best Luke, it must have been a frustrating time recently, your player of the year award is testament to the quality you gave the team in very trying circumstances.
