Gotcha! Aaron Mclean set to sign for Bradford City today

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: Aaron McLean is expected to make his Bantams debut against Sheffield United on Saturday Aaron McLean is expected to make his Bantams debut against Sheffield United on Saturday

City are today set to clinch Aaron Mclean’s capture as their move for the striker edges towards completion.

The Hull hitman was at Valley Parade yesterday afternoon for a medical and talks with joint chairman Julian Rhodes and director of operations David Baldwin.

Mclean is understood to have impressed the City hierarchy with his desire to be a success at his new club and rediscover his previous scoring form in League One.

It is thought that everything has been finalised with the City side of the deal but there are still a couple of minor loose ends to be tied up with Hull, regarding the remainder of his contract.

It is highly likely that the move will be sorted today so that Mclean is available to make his debut in Saturday’s Yorkshire derby at Sheffield United.

He is expected to join his new team-mates this morning for training.

Mclean has always been Phil Parkinson’s top target to fill the gap left by Nahki Wells leaving for Huddersfield.

Other names have been discussed at length in the last few days but it was felt that the 30-year-old – who is likely to become the highest paid player at the club – best fitted the bill.

City did secure one signature yesterday as Matthew Bates penned a new deal that will keep him at Valley Parade for the rest of the season.

The versatile central defender has played 14 times since arriving as a free agent in October on a three-month contract.

Meanwhile, City will find out on Friday, February 7 if they will have to cough up for Mark Stewart.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport extended the deadline for their ruling, which was due this weekend, because of “unforeseen circumstances.”

City appealed against FIFA’s ruling that they owed Falkirk £217,000 in training compensation for the striker.

Welcome to the club Aaron! And good luck with your career with us, here's looking forward to seeing you in action on Saturday.

IMO this was the type of signing needed and hopefully he can get somewhere near his goal scoring form with the Posh. Gives young Ollie and Clarkson chance to progress without too much pressure on them from the off.

Onwards and upwards!

Short term would start him all day long before that guy who left last week. Medium to long term he is a bit older but at 30 he still has at least 3 years off good football left surely.

Will be a great signing - experience to bring on the other strikers and hopefully as fast but slightly less lightweight that you know who. Hopeful that we may still get a goal scoring midfielder but the return of Davies would be the best January news . .

Agreed. Aaron plus Davies = 2 signings. But also Nathan Doyle back fit to supply McLean to feet is key. Need Doyley as holding ball playing rock with a young box to box central mid coming in. I love GJ but we cant rely on him playing every game for much longer, can we? Gonna be one hell of a coach - so hope he stays as a player coach next season.

Good luck to him. we need this to work for the next two seasons. Anyone with a football brain can feed off of hanson. We need better service to hanson in the first place but i'm crossing my fingers for a decent wide right player which as been the case for so long now........Maclean can score at this level and if we can get two decent seasons out of him at least and he helps bring on the younger one's then any value re:re-sale will be offset.......might stick a quid on him scoring saturday now ;_)

Great signing and I may start looking forward to games again after a very miserable couple of months - now that we have a genuine goal threat because Wells wasn't here in spirit for a good couple of months now.
.
I've been told from a good source that Davies has a clause in his contract that his wages increases to match highest earner should somebody earn more then him so I'm sure he'll celebrating too.

Not if McLean's contract is worth say 8k per week for example and so much of it was paid in the signing on fee (upfront), therefore his weekly wage on paper may only be that of Davies.

Let's hope the referees don't think that having 2 imposing centre forward's in ANOTHER excuse to give free-kicks against us. Hanson gets no help from officials, so I'm hoping McLean gets more joy.

In relation to McLean, we all hope he can rediscover his early career form, but will he? He is now 5/6 years older and may have lost a yard of pace since his days at Peterborough. Fingers crossed

Maybe a reason for the delay then to agree a signing on fee meaning his wages would be lower which not trigger davies clause.

He's not that old. I suppose it all depends on the money he's being paid and the length of his contract. Nobody ever knows if a new signing will be a success. Phil seems to know that the player wants to join City and play L1 football.

I read a few of the comments below Hull City's local newspaper website. General consensus on Mclean is

Very enthusiastic and hard working
A genuinely nice bloke
Not good enough technically for the PL, "a Championship player at best"

He's been a bit unlucky recently with injuries and also has been on loan to clubs that haven't played him. I think he could be very good for us, and if he has signed then Parkie has done a good job in persuading him to drop 2 leagues for us.
