Bradford City open the door for Luke Oliver and Alan Connell exits

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: Luke Oliver (pictured) and Alan Connell could have played their last games for City, while Matthew Bates and Matt Taylor may also be heading out of Valley Parade Luke Oliver (pictured) and Alan Connell could have played their last games for City, while Matthew Bates and Matt Taylor may also be heading out of Valley Parade

City are moving closer to unloading some fringe players to make room to freshen up the squad.

The likes of Alan Connell and Luke Oliver could be on the way out – and that will free up space in the budget for Phil Parkinson to bring in new recruits.

As it stands, City’s player wage bill is bordering on the 60 per cent limit of total income permitted for League One clubs. So the onus is on departures during the present transfer window before they can look to make additions.

Striker Connell has been limited to substitute roles and did not even get off the bench at Notts County as Parkinson threw on youngsters Oliver McBurnie and Ryan Clarkson.

With City well stocked for central defenders, Oliver is another touted to leave. The former player of the year has started only three times this season.

Parkinson also has a call to make on Matthew Bates, whose short-term contract expires after the Bristol City home game on Saturday.

Summer recruit Matt Taylor could even be considered surplus to requirements after failing to nail down a regular role. He has had just one 45-minute outing since returning from a successful loan spell with Colchester.

Andrew Davies is stepping up his recovery and should be back by the end of the month to bolster City’s defensive resources.

Parkinson said: “We’ve been working hard over the last three or four days. There have been a couple of calls to take our players, which I’m waiting to come back on.

“That will generate a bit of money which will help to get somebody the other way. We’re doing everything we can.

“A few of our lads need to go out and play and if they do move, that will free up some wages for us to bring one or two in.”

Reports that York were looking at Connell were dismissed by Nigel Worthington at the weekend and Parkinson confirmed: “We’ve not had any contact from them.”

The future of Nahki Wells remains the major talking point.

Championship club Reading are the latest side rumoured to be interested but reports linking him with Nottingham Forest appear unfounded.

Parkinson said he had heard nothing new on his top scorer, who hopes to recover from a tight hamstring to feature against Bristol City on Saturday.

He added: “The most important thing for Nahki is getting back out there and playing as well as he can. The rest takes care of itself.”

After Connor Ripley’s return to Middlesbrough, Parkinson intends to bring in a back-up goalkeeper this week and is casting an eye over Harrogate Town’s Craig MacGillivray.

The Skrill North stopper, who is 21 on Sunday, is training with City for the next couple of days.

Parkinson said: “He’s just one we are looking at. Lee Butler (City goalkeeping coach) has watched Craig a few times and this gives him a chance to train at a professional club.

“The goalkeeping situation is something I will definitely be resolving before Saturday’s game.”

Harrogate want a quick answer and insist City will have to pay as the former Stalybridge Celtic keeper is halfway through a two-year deal.

Boss Simon Weaver said: “It’s not going to be an extensive trial. They are going to have to make their mind up there and then.”

Good luck Connell n Oliver I hope u get good moves n regular football. I thought Taylor was a strange signing at the time and with bates coming in we have robbed the development of mchugh by half a season. Bates is the week link in the back four and I believe this has affected the form on the others around him, please get rid and give mchugh his chance.
We have not kept a clean sheet with bates at centre bak and he won't tackle anyone who runs at him.

Which week? Nobody has been robbed. It's not unknown for two centre-backs to be injured at the same time. Luke Oliver suffered a very bad injury. For the most part Matt Bates has been a good player. Clever centre-backs do not commit themselves to a tackle when faced with a player who runs at him. So, all in all, I not impressed with your assessment. Others might be, I don't know.

really cant see why parky would want to let oliver go ,imo the lad just needs a few starts to get upto pace ,ok we got davis coming back but he has had bad injury in last 2 seasons and you never know how much its affected him, i would deff get rid of bates as i dont think he is strong enough ,tacking very poor and bit to slow ,cant say much about taylor as iv not seen enough to judge him, but it seems its another signing by parky which he thinks is not upto it ,parkys signings for this season have been a disaster ,is de vita still with us not heard anything bout him for while ,i would like to see kennedy on way as imo he runs around like a headless chicken ,we need a strong midfielder who can tackle and get foward ,maybe get few goals, will be sad to see connell go ,the lad has not had a fare chance not one of parkys favourites ,i think he could of played just behind hanson/wells as he is a good passer of ball, i can understand city looking at harrogate keeper as it will save a fare bit money on signing a experienced keeper on wages alone ,think his tranfer fee wouldnt be to much so maybe woth a gamble, plus seems parky is happy with jonny mac ,fingers crossed somebody comes in for wells sooner rather than later with good offer as we are desperate for players ,even if he stays i dont think it will stop us been in relagation fight

Good Morning

This season has been a disaster and if wasn't for the goals by Nakhi Wells we would be looking at the bottom half of the table. We have had a massive injury to Davies and that has shown how we have missed him. Davis does the job of at least three players in the back four. He should be made captain. Sorry Garry Jones brilliant fella, but sadly you can see that this level is just too much for him. At his age 35 (i think) he should be playing in a league below. he has been a great captain and servant for us in the short time that he has been at City and I thank him for all his efforts on the pitch but his time has come. We really need physically strong and fast players in the middle of the park. Doyle and Jones just don't cut it. No pace and no killer passes for Nakhi to run onto.

Our results have been shocking - 1 win in 15 games and a loss to second bottom Notts County was not good enough. Parkinson cannot live on past glories, we had a brilliant season and two trips to Wembley which I will never forget, but some of his man management skills and tactics have been seriously wanting. The treatment of certain squad players has been very bad - Connell and Folan - never got any games. Bates - is just terrible. We have a brilliant CB in McHugh who he never plays brought him back for two games then drops him for Bates!!

I am lost to why Parkinson is still in a job at Bradford City. We have a brilliant fan base, have over 14,000 fans at Valley Parade. Our away fans are some of the best in the four divisions. We need a manager who will instill confidence in the players and bring some quality players in and show that we can play football on the ground!! Football is a simple game and you make it harder if you start playing silly long ball stuff. It just does not work.

It is up to the board on what direction they want the club to go. We really need some investment in the club to move us forward. Personally if we sold Nakhi Wells, I would not give Parkinson any money. I would remove him in the summer and start a fresh with a new manager and new players.

A keeper from Harrogate Town will be on about £2.50 a match plus a quarter of pear drops, far less than the likes of Oliver and Connell so I wouldn't worry about the wage bill.
Why should Lawn put his money back into the club when we don't NEED it, bearing in mind we paid back significantly more than was borrowed last time. It will just mean next time we have a windfall the proceeds would get swallowed up again.

Big fan of Oliver's, he's a far better defender than Taylor who for me should be shown the door but his contract is a problem. Connell is a bit of a conundrum, can be effective but the right move to try and free up cash. De Vita must be a candidate for a loan. Surely we must try to offload Gray who's been a financial drain and in hindsight a disastrous acquisition.

Disaster NO it is not a Disaster but as sometimes happens when you are promoted you find things need changing, City have the odd player now to old and one or two who are not quite up to this standard so this requires change This does not happen over night but requires time to take place. Please do not berate the Manager he is doing his job to the best of his ability he will get it right but please remember Rome was not built in a day so get off his back give him time and above all keep your support going

How can peopel say this season is a disaster?! What's disasterous about it? We're in a bit of a dark patch, players off form which considering the 12 months prior.. its to be expected as with ANY player and team.

Be sad to See Oli go, he's still a good defender but perhaps Parky has sights on another defender or will be happy with mchugh, davies, mcardle as his three options with the 4th being doyle if desperate.

Connell, shame, could have been good but didnt get enough time to show it.

Jonah is too old for this level to ask him to do all that we ask.

Gray needs to be offloaded asap. If he is the top earner at the club surely that can bring us back around 5% of the wage budget?

As long as we strengthen those we move on rather than match like he did in the summer then we'll be good for this year and see what pops up in the summer.

What's wrong with people!! Can you not take some reflection on what Parkinson has done this season. 1 win in 15 is relegation form. Players like Thommo good player and all - but can't finish or pass for toffee. he brings on player with only three mins to go and expects them to change the game.

You have to look at the bigger picture - we are a good team and should not be losing 3-0 away to Notts County. Dropping players like McHugh for no reason is bonkers.

Look we could have been in the play off spots or at last close to them places if we had a bit of nous and won certain matches. Not winning at home since the Shrewsbury game back end of Aug is a shocking. People can call me what they want, I just think that this club with a massive fanbase like ours should be near the top or at least playoffs. If Mk Dons can go and get strikers like Patrick Bamford and Swindon can get Pritchard then we should be doing the same.

Could not agree more!! GJ; great servant but the game is now passing him by (unfortunately). Kyle Reid is also a luxury we cannot afford, his only tactic is speed which works 1 in 20, no imagination; time for a change. PP is a one trick pony and his choice of Bates over McHugh is bewildering.

agree its not a disaster just yet ,but unless we get a few decent higher div loan signings in it could turn into one,imo we should of strenthened in preseason with a few players from higher div clubs, instead we seem to only sign players who have played for parky at previous clubs bates taylor just couple to mention ,these players are clearly not upto it now ,so we throwing money down drain as with lot of his signings this season ,i think we need to strenthen with loan signing to get us through this season ,a strong midfielder ,fast foward ,couple wingers as we never get ball in box for hanson to attack this explains his lack of goals this season,,i wouldnt trust parky with wells money if he goes looks at this seasons signings can anyone name a decent one i cant,,take stock in close season then big decision to be made

We have not kept a clean sheet with bates at centre bak and he won't tackle anyone who runs at him.
I completely agree with this post, Bates has been poor from day one, no physical presence, and weak in the air. I know it was always going to be hard to replace Davies but Mchugh is a far better option. It is true that mccardle,s form has suffered whilst playing alongside Bates. Begining to think that Parky is only keeping him in because he does,nt want to admit that he has made another error in judgement in his recruitment.

What surprises me is the 60% of turnover bit, how do Rotherham manage this with the players they have when their t/o will be less than ours?

Without reflecting too much on individual posts, it is fair to say that we do not have the inside track in terms of what happens on a day to day basis. Our opinions are based (mostly) on conjecture.

A good example of this is the headline of this article "Bradford City open the door for Luke Oliver and Alan Connell exits". Media speculation or the words of Parky? Who knows?

However, it is time to rein in the more extreme suggestions. I would suggest that one or two concerns are from committed, yet panicky, fans whilst others are simply on here to wind the audience up.

No sane judge would suggest a mid table position is disastrous bearing in mind the difficult run of games up to Christmas and that we are newly promoted. We have drawn too many games and recent results show that things need freshening up but that's obvious to everyone. PPs overall contribution has been overwhelmingly positive although you suspect he is disappointed with his summer recruitment. Calling for wholesale changes helps no one and fortunately the current board are not from the Vincent Tan school of management. Parky is here to stay get used to it.

Why do people forget we are newly promoted.
Mid table is EXACTLY where we should be.
We went 3 months without a win last year, and got promoted.

Gunna be very dissapointed to see us trot out the same XI on saturday, despite all other teams around us bringing in new loan signings.

I believe the season has been far from a disaster, first season in a higher division can be hard, the second can be harder still, regarding Gray, I believe in hindsight (which granted is a great thing) that signing was a disaster as it's sucked a considerable amount of much needed finance out of the club. I'm backing the manager, he's a class act but like every human being he'll make mistakes, Gray being one of them. He needs to up his game from his summer acquisitions, a couple of quality outfield signings ( would love to see Dean Furman back at BCFC) plus an experienced keeper and the BCFC ship will start chugging along again.

I actually agree with this comment!
What surprises me is the 60% of turnover bit, how do Rotherham manage this with the players they have when their t/o will be less than ours?
It is odd..Rothers have completely revamped their team and must be running at a significant loss and you would imagine well beyond 55% threshold.

What point are you trying to make in telling the rest of us that you agree? It reads as patronising.

As for the 1 in 15 win ratio, I may as well ask why you (and others like you)did not start sounding off in the 124 games prior to the current iffy spell (139 being Parky's total reign)? Is that because you (and others like you) were too busy riding on the wave of success?

No questions over selection when things are going well.

Taylor FFS! I had forgotten about him. We needed to gradually add a 1 or 2 player of quality. Each time replacing a weak link player with a better one. Not signing 3 or 4 that were not up to it. We all know that football is not an exact science but what has happened it very frustrating and I do think the Chairmen need to have a sit down with Parky and find out what his plan 2 season plan is.

Taylor was a bizarre signing, would like to see him off loaded, Davies, McArdle, McHugh and Oliver would be my picks of central defenders to be kept. Parkinson knows the pressure is on and as he's a class act he'll come up with the goods in January. A couple of quality signings and an experienced keeper will keep BCFC in calm waters with an outside possibility of a late run to the playoffs.

Spot on and a common sense post. Agree 100% that parky will turn it around. A lot of last years players were on two year deals. How can he move players on who don't want to go? A lot if contracts will be up this summer and parky will rebuild. Still think we will still finish close to the play offs this season tbh

I am not a Leeds bettyswollocks. I have lived in and supported city all my life. Go to the games when I get chance, flexi card, if you must know.

I even worked at City as a steward from the first era when they got promoted to the Premiership, for 4 seasons. I know the ground inside and out. Know the area, as I live 10 mins away. Look you can go on and troll me, but seriously our play and form of late is beyond silly. We must win games at home, the league is the bread and butter of survival, selling the only quality player we have in Wells is how we are to survive.

Don't be trolling on people just because they tell it how it is. Numpty!!

I agree. The signings are a concern though as he's had a few failures/disappointm
ents in that department and with limited resources more ned to work out than not imo. IF Nahki goes it will be a major test where any money is spent. A crucial period for Parky IF he is given some money to spend and is able able to off load the players to enable him to do so. Who would buy Gray on his wages and recent injuries and performances? (this is where someone says US and they'd be quite right of course but i'd hate to say i told you so prior to the signing ;-)).......

"Selling the one quality player we have in Wells is how we are to survive".

This assumes:

That the club will be able to sell him for an amount that is considered as viable/necessary.

That the replacement(s) will increase the overall quality of the squad.

How can you guarantee a successful outcome?

It's interesting, and I genuinely have no idea, so wondered if you did... But let's say for example we sell Wells for £2.5m, how much of that money would we be allowed to use this season and how much would we be allowed to use next season in keeping with the financial fair play rules?

MC, don't think there are any guarantees in football these days, but one guarantee is, that if wells goes (And it's looking pretty nailed on now isn't it?), then we lose another 10-15 goals for the rest of the season, which could then become a 'Disaster' if we don't bring another striker in that can score the 10-15 goals that Wells takes with him.

Very good comments if Parky was employed in the prem div with that record he would be out of a job, having said that he has done bradford city proud but he has made a quite a few mistakes on the recruiting of players and his selection of the team leaves a lot to be desired, he needs to get a grip because the fantastic fan base that BCity have might diminish before his very eyes.

Hanson, Jonny Mac !
That's exactly what I said a couple of days ago just shows the ambition we have, an absolute joke Parky why don't we just play the youth team and have done with it .
You are undermining the professional integrity of the manager with a cheap shot.

If the potential recruit come from a higher division you would lambast the manager for hiring an expensive flop.

Either way, I bet you were singing Parky's praises back in May.

The majority of the fan base can see the magnificent progress that has been made over the past two and a half years.

The numbers will only diminish by the sum total of those who are not true fans in the first place.

"Selling the one quality player we have in Wells is how we are to survive". This assumes: That the club will be able to sell him for an amount that is considered as viable/necessary.
I think you have made a good assessment in terms of how many goals would be lost in the event of Wells' departure.

By explaining the improvements to the overall quality, I was looking at the way in which the loss would be obviated by a suitable replacement (or replacements) that could equal/surpass a 10-15 goals tally; not only in terms of goals scored but the overall contribution to the results.

It is ridiculous to suppose that a quick sale would be the solution without any thought as to the consequences.

Whilst saying the season is a disaster is a bit strong it has turned dissapointing and like it or not that lands soley at the feet of Parky. Its no good trying to defend him and say mid table is ok because in five or six games time on our current form we could be dragged into deep trouble. With lump it tactics, no plan b and squad players that couldnt get on the bench at a lg 2 team who else would you say is responsible? Whilst most clubs in this div were busy signing up and coming prem lg talent we plumbed for players who were out of contract for very good reasons. Whilst its not too late to turn things around a defeat on sat would be the last straw for me.

Just like he did last season when Blackpool came calling. Two divisions higher and a chance to triple his wage.

If bates ad not been signed surely we wud av mchugh playing at centre bak rather than on the bench, the back four of mcardle mchugh Meredith n Darby have history from last year a great understanding. Bates is scared t tackle he can not defend. Davies is our best centre half r u saying he does not tackle well I am afraid u must not watch him because he gets tight forces wide n he will often put more than a boot in!

Is that all that matters to you? For the record I've been a regular since 1983. I have a flexi card due to the fact that with rearranged fixtures there's a good chance I have to miss a few games. Last 2 seasons I've ended up paying more than I would for a season ticket though as I've been able to get to most games. Before that I had a season ticket for more years than I care to remember. So if you want to take me on on that score go for it pal.

I wasn't trolling, I was just "saying it as it is". Have a look the score your comment is on and the score my reply got, Popular opinion seems to lie with me.

In fairness, you did not deny that you were a k**bhead when the idea was first mooted. Instead, you made a reference to Leeds. The fact that you did not address the accusation gave credence to the possibility that you are one i.e. a k**bhead.
