Bradford Bulls: Garreth Carvell one of best props in the world, says Manase Manuokafoa
Manase Manuokafoa believes the Bulls have recruited one of the “best props in the world” in Garreth Carvell.
Francis Cummins enjoyed a profitable recruitment drive during the off-season which harvested the acquisition of Lee Gaskell, Luke George, Dale Ferguson, Adam Henry, Frank Winterstein and Carvell.
The England international enjoyed a glittering five-year spell with Warrington, helping Tony Smith’s side to three Challenge Cup wins, before agreeing to join the Bulls on a two-year deal.
Manuokafoa has crossed swords with Carvell during the past two seasons and believes the England international will prove an outstanding signing.
The imposing Tongan said: “He’s one of the best props in the world so it’s great to have him on board.
“Hopefully we can learn from him and he can learn from us too.
“He’s an England international and he’s won a lot of silverware during his time at Warrington.
“I’m looking forward to playing alongside him rather than having to go against him.
“We want to build for the future with the young kids coming through the Academy. We want to recreate that winning culture and Gaz can help us massively on that front.
“He’s played in big games for big clubs and has represented his country.”
Manuokafoa, who missed Tonga’s World Cup campaign after heading home to visit his family, believes the Bulls are well served in the front row area following the arrival of Carvell.
Cummins has Adam Sidlow, Nick Scruton, Manuokafoa and Carvell to pick from and remains hopeful of bringing Ben Evans back to the club following his successful loan spell last term.
Manuokafoa added: “It’s good healthy competition for the club – the likes of Carvell, Ziggy and Scrutes.
“This year was a bit hard playing with three front-rowers at times but next season we should have greater rotation.
“Sometimes last season it was only Scrutes and I but we are big lads and we need that interchange at times to get our breath back because it’s a hard game.
“I’m looking forward to playing with Gaz, Ziggy and Scrutes, so this year we should have a formidable pack.”
The Bulls resumed pre-season training today and new recruit Frank Winterstein was expected to join up with the squad.
