Bradford Bulls: Garreth Carvell one of best props in the world, says Manase Manuokafoa

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: Garreth Carvell is the the latest addition to a formidable Bulls pack Garreth Carvell is the the latest addition to a formidable Bulls pack

Manase Manuokafoa believes the Bulls have recruited one of the “best props in the world” in Garreth Carvell.

Francis Cummins enjoyed a profitable recruitment drive during the off-season which harvested the acquisition of Lee Gaskell, Luke George, Dale Ferguson, Adam Henry, Frank Winterstein and Carvell.

The England international enjoyed a glittering five-year spell with Warrington, helping Tony Smith’s side to three Challenge Cup wins, before agreeing to join the Bulls on a two-year deal.

Manuokafoa has crossed swords with Carvell during the past two seasons and believes the England international will prove an outstanding signing.

The imposing Tongan said: “He’s one of the best props in the world so it’s great to have him on board.

“Hopefully we can learn from him and he can learn from us too.

“He’s an England international and he’s won a lot of silverware during his time at Warrington.

“I’m looking forward to playing alongside him rather than having to go against him.

“We want to build for the future with the young kids coming through the Academy. We want to recreate that winning culture and Gaz can help us massively on that front.

“He’s played in big games for big clubs and has represented his country.”

Manuokafoa, who missed Tonga’s World Cup campaign after heading home to visit his family, believes the Bulls are well served in the front row area following the arrival of Carvell.

Cummins has Adam Sidlow, Nick Scruton, Manuokafoa and Carvell to pick from and remains hopeful of bringing Ben Evans back to the club following his successful loan spell last term.

Manuokafoa added: “It’s good healthy competition for the club – the likes of Carvell, Ziggy and Scrutes.

“This year was a bit hard playing with three front-rowers at times but next season we should have greater rotation.

“Sometimes last season it was only Scrutes and I but we are big lads and we need that interchange at times to get our breath back because it’s a hard game.

“I’m looking forward to playing with Gaz, Ziggy and Scrutes, so this year we should have a formidable pack.”

The Bulls resumed pre-season training today and new recruit Frank Winterstein was expected to join up with the squad.

I await the inevitable "Hurr hurr look Viking has a new username!" sorts of posts.

I'm hoping that through all this we can keep hold of Carvell, we could really use an enforcer type in our pack. Him and Sammut are the two that I think we really need to do our best to keep hold of. Unfortunately they're probably the two that other teams are more likely to want.

Most other teams have filled there spots regarding te cap there will be London
and Wakey may be looking for players but i believe London would be the best bet
They have ample quota left but will players want to go down to the Capital to play it is a long way without moving down there and it is expensive to live

I like many other fans hope we cn keep all our players lets get the warm up games started and bring some revenue into the club and back the team
The players and staff have gone through a very rough period but they have stuck with the club when some could have just walked away so COYB fans lets get ready to Rumble

Think London is really the only option available. All the other NRL & SL teams are now sorted and probably have a good idea of their starting line ups and structures. Its only injuries now that might tempt them back into the market. London do need a half back as a priority so Gale or Sammut would fit that bill. Think London have probably signed a dozen or players and will announce them within the next week along with their season ticket deals and new shirts. That's how far behind everyone else they actually are.

Anyone who does sign for them will probably only get a 1 year deal because they're almost certain to finish bottom and David Hughes doesn't want to commit any more funds until the RFL have made up their minds about 2015. At which point he might step aside and let the Barnet chairman Tony Kleanthous take control of the club.

Either way, the cost of renting in London would have to be taken into consideration before any player was tempted down there for a full season of hard graft defensive work week in week out. Think Gale or Sammut would be mad to consider it.

Maybe players like Carvell, Walker, Purtell, Diskin or Kearney at the back end of their careers might suit the shorter term option which could lead to stepping down a division next season to extend their careers and take advantage of new avenues in coaching or development work within London after their playing days are over
