Woodhouse Grove School's rugby union team have created a small piece of history by winning the inaugural Daily Mail National Trophy.

The team put on a fantastic show and won their penultimate game at Kirkham Grammar 38-7, making them uncatchable at the top of the merit table.

Woodhouse Grove head of rugby Adrian Sweeney is proud of his team’s success and said: “To win such a title is a great achievement and it has been years in the making.

“Many of the boys in the team have been at our junior school before coming to the Grove.

“This season’s success has seen important input going into their development from many coaches, who I am sure will be particularly proud to see the boys they taught the basics to develop into a national champion team.

“This group of boys have had many close shaves, with national glory through the age-groups, and there are players no longer in the team who can also share in the success today.”
