Peter Jagger was crowned Victor Ludorum Invitation Merit champion for a second time after ending Paul Hillam’s bid for a hat-trick of titles.

Wyke bowler Jagger beat his Eccleshill opponent 21-16 in the final of the Wibsey DIY Centre-sponsored event, which was held at a different venue this year.

Work on the Clayton green meant a switch to Shipley and this proved to be a great choice as a good crowd turned out to see 16 of this season’s winners, runners-up and Saturday League average winners play in the end-of-season finale.

Jagger, who first won the Victor Ludorum in 1994 when playing for Birkenshaw, eased through games against Phillip Walker (Harold Park) 21-7 and Alan Peel (Clayton) 21-9 to set up a semi-final against David Smalley (Queensbury).

Slow-play tactics by Smalley certainly got to Jagger as he found himself trailing 16-13, before an eight break saw him over the line and into the final.

Hillam was looking to win the title for a third successive year and appeared on course after coming through tough games against Phil Dowgill (Clayton) 21-19, Steve Gardner (Stanningley) 21-13 and Chris Mordue (Pudsey BC) 21-15.

Jagger made the better start in the final as he opened up a 6-3 advantage after eight ends and then 9-4 after 11, before Hillam carded a seven break to take an 11-9 lead.

A double-single combination put Jagger back in front, only for a Hillam single to level the match at 12-12.

But from this stage Jagger scored nine singles, compared to Hillam’s two pairs, to take the game 21-16 and seal that second Champion of Champions title.

* James Davison (Eccleshill) won an amazing final against Greg Smith (West Brom FSC) 21-20 to clinch the Pudsey Classic title.

Both players were on top form throughout the Yorkshire Building Society-sponsored event, with Davison beating Callum Wraight (Castlefields) 21-16, Danny Fountain (Brighouse Sports) 21-9 and Mark Hughes (Crossgates) 21-16 to make it through to the decider.

Smith saw off Chris Brown (Lower Hopton) 21-12, Richie Goddard (Castlefields) 21-13 and Ryan Clark (Thongsbridge) 21-20 to book his place.

Davison was a worthy winner as he bowled superbly from start to finish. But Smith, who had made the journey up from the West Midlands, will surely be challenging again in years to come as he showed what a great player he is.
