Guiseley 1, Workington 0

A last-gasp strike from substitute Jake Lawlor banked Guiseley a hard-earned three points.

Workington were the Skrill North visitors to Nethermoor and they proved to be tough opponents.

The Lions laboured hard in the Bank Holiday sunshine but they were finally rewarded for their persistence.

Guiseley’s forwards were struggling but their midfield was working tirelessly.

The visitors were first to threaten when Jonny Wright’s header was cleared off the line by Jake Scott.

The Lions immediately launched a counter-attack but Phil Marsh struck a half-volley over the target.

Marsh went close with a well-directed header in the first half that the visitors’ keeper did well to palm for a corner and a shot into the side-netting after the interval.

Guiseley boss Steve Kittrick did what he could to try to make something happen, using all three of his substitutes.

Lawlor came on for midfielder Scott after the on-loan Barnsley man picked up a head injury.

It was into the fourth minute of time added on when Lawlor headed in the dramatic winner, much to the delight of the home crowd.

A relieved Kittrick said: “It’s the first and last ten minutes that either loses or wins game for you.

“I don’t think we deserved it but we’ve got three points. One or two of our lads were out of sorts, so I know we can do better.

“Jake came on and got us that header which was great. It really is hard coming off the bench, especially when your team is under the cosh, so full credit to him.”
